A night to forget for Mohamed Salah and Liverpool. The Reds again showed that they are genuinely struggling this season. After an ideal start against Real Madrid, Liverpool came back down to earth. Their two-goal lead, built in 14 minutes through Nunez (4th) and Salah (14th), proved to be a false dawn. After that red storm hit Anfield, it seemed the Maison Blanche would be flooded. But although the Casa Blanca experienced rising waters, they were never submerged. Madrid quickly mopped up, clearing everything away and restoring colour to the Maison Blanche.
Vinicius Junior began the clean-up in the 21st and 36th minutes, helped by Eder Militao (47th) and Karim Benzema (the source prints ‘55rn 67e’). The final score was 5-2, silencing Anfield completely. Liverpool already seem to have one foot out. This heavy defeat in the first leg of the Champions League round of sixteen will be difficult to overturn in the return match.
Osimhen unstoppable
Napoli, meanwhile, won (0-2) away at Frankfurt, with the prolific Super Eagle scoring in the 40th minute. The Neapolitans were heading in the right direction, perhaps effectively settling this round of sixteen tie over just one leg. This 2-0 away win would all but secure a place in the quarter-finals of the competition with the famous big-eared trophy.
