Rome: Real’s comeback sets the web alight
Trailing Roma 3–1 until the 83rd minute, Real Madrid won 4–3. One user hails the “White Walkers” of Tuesday and Wednesday nights, another puts two scoreboards taken seven minutes apart side by side, and admirers of Arda Güler, who provided two assists after coming on in the 59th minute, simply rewrite the score. Endrick, who came on at the same time and scored in the 85th minute, provides an easy dig at José Mourinho. On Instagram, “ARDA GÜLER THE GAME CHANGER” collects more than 3,700 likes under the result posted by UEFA. The Madrid manager, for his part, pours cold water on the celebrations with a joke: had the team from the end of the game started, “we would have lost 5-0”.
Manchester: Paris get people talking
A few hours before the big match, the Parisian commentator on the City v PSG under-19s game got so carried away that his commentary passed 55,000 likes. In the evening, Jérémy Doku tried his feint on Achraf Hakimi, without success, and the sequence did the rounds on social media. Paris won 4–2, but one user remembered the second half: according to him, “City could have scored 9”.
Milan, Stavanger, Madrid, Istanbul
Beaten 4–3 at home by Bruges, Inter were teased by a user who “thanks Belgium”. Before Viking v Bayern, a content creator was promising the Norwegian club a hiding; Viking led 2–0 in the 38th minute and snatched a 3–3 draw in the 90th, before Viking’s French-language fan account answered the Bayern supporters. Manchester United, beaten 2–0 by Atlético Madrid, even had their own fans laughing, while others were already thinking about Sunday’s trip to Leeds. In Istanbul, after Barça’s 4–1 win, Lamine Yamal dreams of a treble, and one fan does the maths: Thierry Henry had won it when Yamal was one year old. Gabon’s Mario Lemina, beaten with Galatasaray, answered the Catalan forward with a smile after he asked whether he knew him “now”.
