Some matches go beyond the confines of sport. El Clasico between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona is one of them. It reflects a rivalry that transcends generations, a clash where passion, history and technique blend to create a unique spectacle. For me, every meeting between these two giants of football is a return to my roots, a journey where memories of youth and hopes for the present merge. In Europe, my heart has always beaten for Spanish players, and even more so for the spotless white shirts of Real Madrid.
A love affair born of an epic
My love story with Real Madrid began in 1998, on a magical Champions League night. That year, the Merengues ended a 32-year wait by winning their seventh European title, against Zidane's Juventus. But beyond the victory, it was the figure of Raul, a young striker with a simple, effective style, who left a lasting impression on me. That number 7, who seemed to play effortlessly yet with surgical precision, embodied the football I love: direct, pure, elegant. Since then, Real Madrid have been my favourite club in Spain, a team I have followed through their triumphs and their disappointments.
The Clasicos I remember
Clasicos have always held a special resonance for me, but the one in the 2004-2005 season remains etched in my memory. That night, Real Madrid, led by their "Galacticos", won 4-2 in a blazing Santiago Bernabeu. Ronaldo, Raúl, Beckham and Owen scored for the Merengues, while Eto'o and Ronaldinho salvaged some pride for Barça. It was an era when every touch, every pass, every shot seemed to unfold in slow motion, like a symphony played by virtuosos of the beautiful game.
Those matches had a unique flavour, that of an era when icons such as Zinédine Zidane, Luis Figo, Roberto Carlos and Cristiano Ronaldo lit up the pitch. For me, those moments went beyond the 90 minutes, carrying on into raucous evenings spent replaying those scenes on PES with my cousins. It was more than a game, it was a waking dream, an attempt to capture the essence of the legends who thrilled us through the screen.
Today's match: a new page to be written
Today, a new chapter of this rivalry was written at the Santiago Bernabeu. FC Barcelona, top of La Liga, faced a Real Madrid side looking for redemption and revenge. Both teams fielded line-ups worthy of the biggest occasions, with dazzling talents on each side: Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham and Mbappé for the Madrid side; Pedri, Gavi and Lewandowski for the Catalans.
The first half was an intense, tactical arm-wrestle, ending goalless (0-0). Real Madrid, true to their style, tried to exploit the space left by Barça, relying on pace and balls in behind, while Barcelona imposed their control of the ball, looking to dictate the tempo. You could feel that everything could turn on a moment of genius or a single error that would open the door.
A one-sided second half
And then the story took shape. In the second half, a virtuoso FC Barcelona took total control of the match. Robert Lewandowski, imperious in front of goal, opened the scoring in the 54th minute, meeting a pin-point pass from Casado to beat Lunin with a precise finish. Barely two minutes later, he added a second, this time with a header from a perfect cross by Baldé. It was the hammer blow that left the Madrid defence completely disorientated.
But the Catalans did not stop there. The young prodigy Lamine Yamal, at just 17, scored the third in the 77th minute, finishing off a team move started by Raphinha. And to top off the performance, it was Raphinha himself, captain on the night, who sealed the win with a superb fourth, leaving the Santiago Bernabeu stunned into silence. It was a lesson in football, a show of strength that will be remembered for a long time.
A bitter defeat, but one full of hope
For me, this defeat is heavy and bitter, but it will never stop me loving this team I have supported over the years. Real Madrid created plenty of chances, notably thanks to Mbappé's sharpness, but a lack of finishing and a touch of bad luck proved costly. Shots hit the woodwork, efforts were repelled by a Barcelona goalkeeper in inspired form. Even though this Classico did not end in our favour, it was a match that lived up to expectations, intense and thrilling, with Barça the better side this time.
Tonight, I am disappointed, yes, but never disillusioned. Football is made of highs and lows, of resounding victories and painful setbacks. But after every defeat, a fresh opportunity appears, and I remain convinced that Real Madrid will bounce back, move forward and write a new glorious page. Because that is also what football is: a never-ending story, a perpetual quest for redemption and greatness, where every whistle is a new beginning, and every match a new symphony to play.
