Ligue 1: Lyon return to the top three as Fonseca's future raises questions

Olympique Lyonnais responded perfectly to their first league defeat of the season. Les Gones beat Angers (3-0) on Sunday in matchday 10 of Ligue 1. The win lifts them back into third place in the table, against a backdrop of uncertainty over the future of their coach, Paulo Fonseca, reported to be a priority target for Sporting Portugal.

After their defeat to Paris Saint-Germain the previous week, Lyon were determined to return to winning ways in front of their home fans. Dominant from the opening minutes, they piled on the pressure but were long frustrated by the vigilance of Anthony Lopes, the former OL goalkeeper.

The breakthrough finally came in the 38th minute. Meeting a cross from Abner Vinicius, Corentin Tolisso chested the ball down for Ernest Nuamah. The Ghanaian forward then swivelled and finished with his right foot to put the hosts ahead.

Tolisso gives OL a more comfortable win

After the break, Angers tried to get back into the game, but Lyon kept control. The visitors did have a few chances to pull one back, notably through Prosper Peter, whose effort had hit the post in the first half.

Despite several chances at both ends, Lyon eventually extended their lead in the 86th minute. From a perfectly delivered Keito Nakamura corner, Corentin Tolisso sent an unstoppable cross-goal header into the net for Lyon's second goal. It also produced a memorable scene: the captain rushed over to Paulo Fonseca to embrace him, with the Portuguese coach appearing visibly moved.

Fonseca: a win amid uncertainty

The emotion comes as Paulo Fonseca's future at Lyon is the subject of much questioning. According to information reported by Flashscore, Sporting Portugal have reportedly made the Lyon coach their priority to succeed Rui Borges.

The prospect lends extra significance to the win, potentially one of Fonseca's last appearances on the Lyon bench at the Groupama Stadium. No announcement of his departure has been made, however.

On the pitch, Olympique Lyonnais did excellent business. With this victory, the Rhône club climb back to third in Ligue 1 and show their ability to bounce back after their first defeat of the season. The question now is whether Paulo Fonseca will carry that momentum on at the helm of Les Gones.
