Liverpool 4–3 Villarreal

Anfield found its voice again before half-time. Two goals down after 29 minutes, Liverpool recovered to beat Villarreal 4–3 on Tuesday 20 October 2026 in the third round of the Champions League league phase. The Reds repaired their poor start, then accelerated into a lead that a late Spanish goal made uncomfortable.

Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a left-footed finish from a tight angle. Sergi Cardona doubled the advantage in the 29th, finishing a transition after Nathan Saliba’s pass. Villarreal had done far more than hold their ground: they had punished the space Liverpool allowed them.

Liverpool’s first response came in the air. Alexis Mac Allister headed in Kostas Tsimikas’s cross in the 36th minute. Ronald Araújo then equalised in first-half stoppage time from a ball supplied by Rio Ngumoha. At 2–2, the home side had erased the deficit before the interval.

Mac Allister put Liverpool ahead in the 65th minute, again with Ngumoha providing the assist. Three minutes later, Florian Wirtz finished a counter-attack from Cody Gakpo’s pass. Tani Oluwaseyi’s 87th-minute goal, from an Ayoze Pérez cross, restored the tension without changing the outcome.

SNA analysis

Two passages shaped the comeback. The goals before half-time denied Villarreal the chance to manage their lead after the break. Liverpool then turned a spell of pressure into two goals in quick succession. Ngumoha connected those moments: his two assists helped produce the equaliser and the first Liverpool lead.

The result does not erase the warnings. Conceding three at home, including one after establishing a two-goal cushion, demands a more searching assessment than a celebration of attacking talent alone. Liverpool found several ways to score; protecting their progress remains a separate challenge.

The impact of the bench

Andoni Iraola introduced Wirtz for Araújo at half-time. The substitute scored the fourth goal, giving the change a tangible impact. Alexander Isak arrived in the 66th minute, followed by Bradley Barcola and Joe Gomez in the 74th. James McConnell replaced Trey Nyoni in the 81st.

Villarreal also drew on their bench: Oluwaseyi came on at the interval and Ayoze Pérez on the hour. Their combination for the visitors’ third goal kept a route back into the contest open until the closing stages.

What the result means

Liverpool retain a perfect record: three wins and nine points from three games. The performance underlined their attacking resources and the influence of their substitutes.
