Orlando must connect their three creators
Sean Sweeney must link Banchero, Wagner and Bane. A dated roster, a projected starting five and the Magic's work in progress ahead of a season that must see them clear the first round.

Orlando enter the 2026–2027 season with the same three main creators but a new head coach. Sean Sweeney must find a more fluid offence around Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Desmond Bane without weakening the defence. After a 45-win season and another first-round exit, the Magic above all want to turn individual qualities into more consistent collective solutions.
The starting point: a playoff place and a ceiling to raise
Eighth in the Eastern Conference with 45 wins and 37 losses in the 2025–2026 regular season, Orlando ended their run against Detroit after seven games in the first round. The record shows the scale of the task: the group knows how to reach the playoffs but has yet to clear this first hurdle with its current core. A top-six finish would spare them the play-in tournament.
The Magic scored 115.7 points and conceded 115.1 per game in that regular season. That slim margin is a reminder that a squad's quality does not excuse it from mastering ordinary possessions: getting a good shot when the first drive is stopped, limiting turnovers and finishing a defensive sequence with a rebound. Sweeney, appointed in June after Jamahl Mosley's departure, inherits a group to develop rather than a roster to rebuild.

The moves: Sweeney arrives, Vučević returns
The main change is on the bench. Sweeney takes charge of a team whose principal offensive responsibilities remain clear. He will have to organise the sharing of the ball between Banchero, Wagner and Bane while leaving Jalen Suggs a role in running the game. Quicker ball movement should help find the open man before the defence recovers. The first weeks will show whether that movement stays effective when opponents close off the initial options.
Nikola Vučević returns to Orlando and provides another option at centre. His experience can help the second unit organise its attacks and offer an outlet when the game slows down. Wendell Carter Jr. and Goga Bitadze remain in the group, so the newcomer's place will depend on the pairings chosen. Moritz Wagner has joined Brooklyn. Izaiyah Nelson arrives on a two-way contract, split between the NBA and the G League. Jonathan Isaac and Jevon Carter have been retained for the new season.

Banchero, Wagner and Bane: three creators to make work together
Paolo Banchero
Banchero finished the 2025–2026 regular season averaging 22.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. He can initiate close to the basket or start from further out to draw help. The progress expected of him is therefore not simply to score more: it also concerns when he passes, and what he does once the ball has been given to a team-mate. A cut to the rim or a screen can extend his influence without the ball coming straight back to him.
Wagner offers a second creation point, while Bane brings an outside threat capable of pulling the help defenders out of position. The challenge is to preserve that threat when all three share the floor. If a defender leaves Bane to close off the route to the rim, Orlando must be able to find him quickly; if the defence stays attached to the shooter, Banchero and Wagner must have room to attack. These combinations still have to find their rhythm in Sweeney's system.

The projected starting five and the bench options
Our season projection pairs Suggs, Bane, Wagner, Banchero and Carter Jr. This SNA five remains hypothetical and subject to availability: it is not a line-up announced for the first game. Suggs would be responsible for defending the ball-handler and helping with organisation, Bane for stretching the defence, the two big wings for creating, and Carter Jr. for linking the action around the rim.
Anthony Black can take on some of the ball-handling and allow a creator to work off the ball. Tristan da Silva and Noah Penda offer options on the wings, while Jase Richardson must earn his place in the perimeter sequences. Vučević and Bitadze offer different solutions inside. Isaac can change the defensive pairings when he is available, Jevon Carter bring experienced cover and Jamal Cain complete the options on the wings. Sweeney can alter this split depending on opponents and availability.
Several players' availability remained to be confirmed at the end of the preseason. This projection will have to be adjusted to the group actually fit to play at the opener, with no assumptions about return dates.

The roster at 17 October 2026, by position
This provisional list of 17 players excludes Malaki Branham, JD Davison and Kevin Knox II, whose departures were reported on 17 October. The official roster page still carried their names when we checked on 17 October. The groupings describe roles and allow for versatile profiles. Colin Castleton, Izaiyah Nelson and Alex Morales are on two-way contracts. This dated list may still change before the opener and is no guarantee of playing in the first game.

Positions grouped, versatile profiles. Banchero's stats: 2025–2026 regular season. "–": data not included in this table. Contracts and availability subject to change.
Nelson appears here with the big men because of his possible role, even though the official classification lists him among the forwards. A player's presence on this list does not allow any conclusion about his medical availability, starter status or a secured place in the rotation.
Strengths and risks: solutions, provided they are linked up
Orlando have several players capable of creating a first advantage, versatile frames and different centre pairings. That gives Sweeney the chance to change a game without abandoning all his reference points. But this wealth can also produce successive possessions run by a single player if the movement stops once the first pass has been made.
The continuity of play will therefore be a more useful indicator than simply adding up the points of the three leading figures. It will be worth watching whether the perimeter players find shots after ball movement, whether the bench keeps its structure when Banchero rests, and whether the team keeps its defensive balance while speeding up. Health and the sharing of responsibilities remain two real uncertainties; the preseason does not resolve them.
The foundations
- Three complementary creators.
- Versatile profiles on the wings.
- Several options at centre.
The work to do
- Speed up decision-making and ball movement.
- Build sequences with the bench players.
- Get a full squad back and protect the defence.
The ambition: clearing the first round
Winning a series is a coherent objective for this group. A better regular-season finish could bring more favourable conditions, but no ranking is guaranteed. Above all, the Magic must show that their offensive answers survive against a defence that knows their first options, without losing the necessary effort at the other end of the floor.
The first sign of progress will be collective: Banchero and Wagner useful even without carrying every attack, Bane found before a shooting window closes, and substitutes who extend the play. It is in this ability to string decisions together that Orlando can get a different result in the spring.
Getting past the first round requires more consistency in decision-making.
The new set-up must connect the strengths of Banchero, Wagner and Bane.
