Manchester City remain in contention to defend the League Cup after surviving Brighton at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday 28 October. Enzo Maresca’s side twice came from behind to draw 2-2 before winning the penalty shootout 4-3. Gerónimo Rulli saved two spot-kicks to send the holders into the quarter-finals.

Yalcouyé strikes before Kovačić responds

Brighton made the breakthrough after half an hour. Malick Yalcouyé converted from close range following Georginio Rutter’s delivery to give the visitors the lead in the 30th minute. The goal rewarded a spell in which the Seagulls had asked questions of City’s defence, with both managers having made substantial changes to their teams.

Mateo Kovačić supplied the first City response. Phil Foden set up the Croatian, who struck from outside the penalty area to make it 1-1 in the 40th minute. The hosts reached the interval on level terms, but Brighton’s attacking threat had not disappeared.

Rutter restores Brighton’s lead

The visitors needed little time to take the lead again. Jaouen Hadjam supplied Rutter in the 47th minute and the forward finished to put Brighton back in front. Rutter subsequently hit the crossbar as City faced the prospect of a damaging third goal.

Instead, the holders found another equaliser. Rayan Cherki’s free-kick reached Vitor Reis in the 72nd minute and the ball ended up in the net. The Brazilian defender was credited with the goal, while Cherki provided the decisive delivery from the set-piece.

Neither team found a winner before the end of normal time. City had recovered from two deficits to keep their defence of the trophy alive, while Brighton were left to rue opportunities to establish a more comfortable advantage. The tie would be settled by penalties.

Rulli changes the shootout

The shootout initially offered Brighton the advantage when Jason Steele saved Kovačić’s attempt. The midfielder who had drawn City level before half-time could not convert his spot-kick, leaving his team in need of a response from their own goalkeeper.

Rulli delivered it by saving Yasin Ayari’s penalty. Cherki then converted to put City 4-3 ahead in the shootout, before the Argentine goalkeeper denied Lewis Dunk. Those two saves completed City’s recovery and secured a quarter-final place.

City keep their title defence alive

For City, the essential outcome was progression despite an uncomfortable evening. Brighton leave the competition after coming close to swinging the tie in their favour during both the match and the shootout. Their attacking play had repeatedly tested the holders, but they could not turn that threat into qualification.

In the same round, Fleetwood knocked Arsenal out on penalties the previous evening. City survived their own shootout to keep their title defence alive.

Bradford City await in the quarter-finals

The quarter-final draw has paired Manchester City with Bradford City. City will be at home, with the tie to be played during the week commencing 14 December.
