Ivory Coast won sixteen medals at the African MMA Championships in Abidjan. The host nation finished behind Algeria in the nations' standings, which are ranked first by number of titles. Their haul comprises four golds, seven silvers and five bronzes.
More medals, but fewer titles than Algeria
The two rankings tell different stories. The Ivorian delegation won more medals than Algeria, who have eight: six gold, one silver and one bronze. Algeria's six titles, however, put them top, ahead of Ivory Coast's four. The total of sixteen medals was therefore not enough to make Ivory Coast the winning nation of the competition.
Burkina Faso complete the nations' podium with two golds, three silvers and five bronzes, ten medals in all. The competition ended on Thursday 15 October at the Treichville venue, after three days of fighting.
A result within the GAMMA circuit
The championships were organised by the Ivorian MMA Federation under the aegis of the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts, or GAMMA. That context matters when reading the result: the tally relates to this amateur MMA competition, not to all the organisations that govern mixed martial arts.
The Abidjan week also saw the creation of AFCOMMA, the African confederation of the GAMMA network, on 13 October. Its presidency goes to Ivorian Tapé Jackson Parfait and its secretary general to Congolese Rodrigue Masuama Ndangi. Ivory Coast's sporting haul and this continental responsibility are two separate outcomes of the event.
