This summer 2023, Wilfried Singo stepped up a level in his young career. The 22-year-old joined Monaco from Torino. It was a low-key arrival, but a rapid adaptation for the Ivory Coast international (7 caps). Able to play in central defence or out wide, he has already played 13 games in Ligue 1, all as a starter (1 goal). It is a successful settling-in period that is delighting fans of the Principality club.
And at Monaco, one of his role models left a real mark. That man is Nicolas Nkoulou. Wilfried Singo also crossed paths with him in Italy. "Nicolas Nkoulou? He is an excellent player and a very good person who helped me a lot in my progress when I was in Italy. Before coming to AS Monaco, I spoke with him about the club, and he told me I would develop a lot here, " he says on the website of the red and whites.
An Africa Cup of Nations dream
However, in January 2024, Wilfried Singo will be leaving Monaco for a spell. The Elephant will play in the Africa Cup of Nations at home, in Ivory Coast. And even though he is not yet an automatic pick for the national team, it will let him live out a childhood dream.
"It has been a dream of mine since I was little! Playing for the Ivory Coast national team is a privilege, especially as the competition is taking place in our country this year. (…). It would be exceptional to win it for our supporters", Wilfried Singo admits.
