Memphis Depay and his team-mates are through to the quarter-finals of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Without having to get out of second gear, the Netherlands comfortably beat the United States in the round of 16 on Saturday 3 December. The Dutch dominated the contest from start to finish. They took the lead in the 10th minute. Gakpo, in prolific form since the start of this World Cup, accelerated through the middle and slipped Dumfries away down the right. The Inter Milan full-back found Memphis Depay arriving at the edge of the box, and he put the ball in the back of the net. Depay thus becomes the Netherlands' second-highest goalscorer with 43 goals in 85 caps. The Barcelona forward is seven goals short of Van Persie's record (50 goals).
Louis Van Gaal's side doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time thanks to Daley Blind, again set up nicely by Dumfries. It was a perfect first half for the Oranje. After the restart, Timothy Weah's team-mates failed to create danger in the Dutch box. They did manage to pull one back, though. Haji Right lofted the ball over the goalkeeper from a Pulisic cross (76th). While they were pushing for an equaliser, the Americans were punished by Dumfries, clearly on fire, late on (81st). A helpless United States side thus went down to the Netherlands. In the quarter-finals, the Oranje will face the winner of Argentina-Australia, scheduled for 19:00 GMT.
