Morocco has officially declared its bid to host the 2030 World Cup. The Kingdom wants to team up with Spain and Portugal. And that dream could become reality. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is convinced of it. Meeting as its executive committee on Thursday 06 April 2023, the body publicly backed Morocco in a statement. The message is clear: all of Africa is behind the country of King Mohammed VI.
"The unanimous decision by the CAF Executive Committee to support Morocco's bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup means that Morocco's bid is now the bid of the African continent. We are now working to ensure that Africa hosts the FIFA World Cup again, and we are committed to working with all national associations and football confederations to make that happen", CAF president Patrice Motsepe said.
A World Cup coming after an Africa Cup of Nations?
Inevitably, CAF's backing of Morocco raises questions. At the same executive committee meeting, CAF also announced that the host of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations would be named by September. Morocco is a declared candidate to stage the continental tournament in 2025. Hosting a 24-team Africa Cup of Nations could therefore give Morocco a trial run before 2030. The other bidders are Algeria, Zambia and the joint Nigeria-Benin bid.
