Roughed up by the Nigerians, Lauren James lost her cool. England's best attacker at the Women's World Cup, frustrated, deliberately stepped on Michelle Alozie. The act earned her a red card in the 86th minute. Despite playing with a player fewer, England won and are through to the quarter-finals. But they will face Colombia without James, who has three goals and as many assists at this World Cup.

Aware of the seriousness of her act, Lauren James apologised in a social media post. "All my love and respect to you. I am sorry for what happened. Also, to our English fans and my team-mates, playing with and for you is my greatest honour and I promise to learn from my experience," she said on social media, addressing Alozie.

For her part, the Nigerian Alozie holds no grudge against James. "We are playing on the world stage. This game is a game of passion, overwhelming emotions and moments. All respect to Lauren James", posted the Houston Dash player in the United States.

The English Football Association also made a statement. "Lauren is truly sorry for her actions that led to the red card and is full of remorse. This is totally out of character for her. We will support Lauren throughout and will make representations on her behalf. We fully respect FIFA's disciplinary process and will make no further comment until a decision has been made." FIFA could indeed extend the suspension beyond one match, which could rule James out for the rest of the tournament.
