On paper, the final ended with a two-goal margin. Yet the contest hung on a single goal for a long time.
Sundowns opened the scoring early in the match. Mokoena capitalised on a ball poorly cleared by the Pirates defence after a set piece. The lead came quickly, but it was not decisive. Chaine, the Pirates goalkeeper, played an important role: his saves from León and Santos kept his side within reach.
The key moment comes in the second half, with Sundowns leading only 1-0. The Pirates are awarded a penalty. Lungu steps up to face Williams, who turns his effort away.
That is where the final score becomes misleading. At 1-0, a final remains hanging on a single action, and an equaliser would have reopened everything. Williams' save does not appear on the scoreboard, but it denied the Pirates an ideal chance to get back into the game. The second goal is a penalty converted by Rayners in added time. It sealed a result that the save had already protected.
Reading this 2-0 as a clear-cut display of dominance would therefore be misleading. The goalkeeper's save helps explain why a two-goal margin does not mean the win was secured long before the end.
For Orlando Pirates, the defeat ends a run of four consecutive MTN8 titles. The club will not win a fifth successive title in the competition. Sundowns, for their part, managed to hold on to their advantage when it was at its most fragile.
