NBA Finals runners-up in the spring, San Antonio are no longer just looking to support Victor Wembanyama's progress. The Spurs must turn a 62-win team into a lasting title contender. Their decision to pair De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper puts ball-sharing and defensive balance at the heart of the season.
After the Finals, a higher bar
San Antonio come off a regular season of 62–20 and an NBA Finals defeat to New York. That run changes the yardstick. A good stretch of games will no longer be enough to define progress: the Spurs will have to show they can hold their level while answering the adjustments prepared against them. Mitch Johnson has a recognised foundation, but also players whose roles are still evolving.
The challenge is to keep the spontaneity of a young group without relying on energy alone. Against the best defences, the first screen does not always deliver the hoped-for advantage. San Antonio must then find a second action, a switch of sides or a drive to the rim before the possession is reduced to a difficult shot at the end of the shot clock.
Reinforcements, but no reshuffling of the pecking order
Tobias Harris joins the group, as do rookies Jayden Quaintance, Tarris Reed Jr., Maliq Brown and Ja’Kobi Gillespie. Their arrival adds different profiles around the core players. Harris can provide an experienced option at the forward spots; Reed offers an interior option to develop. Depth will only be useful, however, if everyone knows the situations in which they are expected to step in.
Billy Donovan joins the staff as lead assistant, bringing his experience to Mitch Johnson. Several players can initiate the offence, which gives the coaching staff a significant coordination task. The turnover also affects depth: Bismack Biyombo, Kelly Olynyk, Mason Plumlee and Lindy Waters III are no longer in the squad. The main movement remains internal, though: Harper may be given more responsibility and Castle must confirm the progress of his second season. A return to the Finals will not be prepared with new names alone, but with better use of the group already in place.

Wembanyama must be able to receive an advantage
Wembanyama's presence gives the creators a focal point. A screen followed by a move to the rim, a post-up after a defensive switch or a catch on the move can force two opponents to react. The right decision will not always be to feed him immediately: an extra pass can exploit the help he draws and return the ball to him in a more favourable situation.
Fox can accelerate, Castle can link sequences together and Harper can attack a defence that has already been moved. Vassell matters to this balance through the space he occupies and the shots he can take. These roles are complementary provided the ball moves before the advantage disappears. Without that, having more ball-handlers risks producing a succession of individual initiatives rather than a collective attack.

Harper: two stages of his rookie season
Points per game. The 2025–2026 regular season and playoffs are two distinct scopes, presented separately; not a 2026–2027 projection.
The three-guard gamble
As of 18 October, the projected starting five is Fox, Castle, Harper, Vassell and Wembanyama. The decision to play the three creators together was announced by Mitch Johnson for the opener; the lineup presented here remains a projection based on availability, and may change before the game. It replaces the earlier assumption of Harper consistently coming off the bench as sixth man.
Keldon Johnson, Julian Champagnie, Harrison Barnes and Luke Kornet are the relief options. Tobias Harris remains one to watch and Jayden Quaintance is listed as unavailable at the cut-off point used. Kornet or Reed can allow a bigger lineup. The bench therefore does not just serve to rest the starters: it can change the size, the rim presence and the defensive responsibilities of a sequence.
Possible back-ups, subject to availability
Conditional editorial projection as of 18 October 2026. The text sets out the caveats and alternatives; this graphic does not announce any official line-up. The choice of the three guards was announced for the opener; availability to be reconfirmed before the game.
The squad as of 18 October 2026
The 17 players below appear on the official roster consulted on 18 October 2026. They are grouped by role, with the availability caveats known at that date. A place in this table is not a promise of minutes; rotation choices may vary depending on the opponent and the players available.

End-of-camp snapshot, as of 18 October 2026. Roles are not exclusive. "–": no statistic included in this table; not a zero value. The text distinguishes availability from place in the rotation.
Harris, kept out of the preseason by a calf problem, still has to be reconfirmed for the opener; Quaintance is listed as unavailable. Young players at the end of the bench must be distinguished from established relief options, even when they occupy the same position on a roster sheet. It is their function within the combinations, more than the position label, that will decide how they are used.
Shooting and rebounding face the small-lineup test
With Wembanyama as the only big man in the projected starting five, the perimeter players must help on the boards and close off the driving lanes. Good initial defence can lose its value if it concedes a second chance. The Spurs will also have to avoid asking the Frenchman to fix every lapse: his influence is more useful when he can step in from a stable collective structure.
The other test concerns outside shooting. If defenders can tighten up without being punished, the three creators will see less room to drive and feed the centre. The right indicator will not simply be one night's percentage, but the ability to produce open attempts and to keep moving after a pass. Talent offers several ways in; ball movement has to connect them.
The assets
- Several creators around Wembanyama.
- Recent NBA Finals experience.
- Back-ups to change the size of the line-up.
Issues to resolve
- Keeping the floor spaced with three ball-handlers.
- Contributing on the boards alongside the lone big man.
- Stabilising the combinations before the playoffs.
A contender's claim to maintain all season
The ambition is to play a leading role in the West again and give themselves another chance in the playoffs. That means spreading the workload, developing the relief options and having several tactical answers by the spring. The previous Finals appearance gives the group shared experience; it reserves no place for the next one.
Harper's progress in particular makes it possible to envisage broader responsibilities without waiting for a major signing. His averages of 11.8 points in the regular season and 14.1 in the playoffs in 2025–2026 describe two stages of his first year, in different competitions. They are no promise of an automatic increase. What follows will depend on minutes, combinations and the quality of decisions.
Move the advantage around as fast as the ball.
Sharing the creation must preserve the spacing and the protection of the rebound.
