The career of a legend
Born in Sétif in 1936, Rachid Mekhloufi discovered football at a very young age and quickly stood out for his skill and his vision. In the 1950s he joined AS Saint-Étienne in France, where he established himself as an exceptional striker. His performances made him one of the best players in the French league, and he attracted the attention of Europe's biggest clubs as well as the France national team.
But in 1958, in the middle of the Algerian War of Independence, Mekhloufi made a radical choice: along with other players based in France, he gave up everything to secretly join the National Liberation Front (FLN) team, a side formed to promote the cause of Algerian independence on the international stage. That act of personal sacrifice immediately made him an icon for Algerians fighting for their freedom.
Joining the FLN team
In the FLN team, Rachid Mekhloufi became a leading figure of a politically engaged brand of football, used as a tool of diplomacy to raise the world's awareness of the Algerian cause. The team, made up of many professional players of Algerian origin, travelled the globe, playing international sides and spreading a strong message of support for independence.
At the peak of his sporting career, Mekhloufi gave up glory and official competitions to defend his country. Thanks to him and his team-mates, Algerian football forged a strong identity, associated with the values of courage and freedom.
An exceptional honours list
After Algeria's independence in 1962, Rachid Mekhloufi returned to Saint-Étienne, where he continued to shine on the pitch and added to his list of honours. Among his most notable titles, he won:
- French champion with AS Saint-Étienne in 1957 and 1964
- Coupe de France winner with AS Saint-Étienne in 1962
- Algerian champion with MC Alger in 1972 as a coach
Through these honours, Mekhloufi left his mark on both Algerian and French football. His record reflects not only his talent but also his perseverance and his dedication to the sport.
An everlasting legacy
Rachid Mekhloufi was much more than a simple footballer. His name will remain associated with a rare model of sacrifice and loyalty. His time with the FLN team made him a historic figure, a hero who knew how to use sport to serve a noble cause. After retiring, he continued to work for the development of Algerian football, notably as coach of the national team.
Today, the whole of Algeria mourns the loss of one of its most illustrious sons. Rachid Mekhloufi's name will be remembered for ever, not only for his footballing genius but also for his integrity and his commitment. His story will go on inspiring generations, a reminder that sport can be much more than a game: an act of resistance, a vehicle for freedom and a quest for justice.
