Real Madrid beat Sevilla 4–1 at the Bernabéu on Sunday 18 October ahead of the Clasico. Kylian Mbappé scored twice, but Yan Diomandé is our player of the match: the Ivorian supplied the opener, contributed to the attacking combinations and scored the final goal. Madrid sit third with 21 points from nine games, six behind Barcelona. This was a reassuring victory, rather than proof that every weakness has disappeared.

The match: two accelerations establish the lead
Arda Güler opened the scoring in the 30th minute from Diomandé’s pass near the edge of the area. His left-footed finish rewarded an attack that found a midfielder arriving towards goal. In the 37th minute, Bellingham’s backheel set Mbappé up to beat his opponents, round the goalkeeper and finish. Madrid led 2–0 at half-time.
Mbappé made it three with a Panenka penalty in the 63rd minute after Castrín fouled him. Manu Bueno pulled one back in the 80th, only for Diomandé to finish a powerful run with Madrid’s fourth in the 82nd. Sevilla had just two minutes to imagine a different ending. Madrid’s immediate response prevented a lapse from becoming a genuine crisis.
The statistics: control without complete defensive security
In Madrid–Sevilla order: possession was 64% to 36%, shots 15 to 11, shots on target seven to five and passes 666 to 350. Courtois made four saves and Vlachodimos three. Madrid scored with four of fifteen attempts, a 26.7% conversion rate; Sevilla converted one of eleven, or 9.1%. Finishing therefore explains more of the final margin than the difference in total attempts alone.
Those figures support a clear Madrid advantage, but not the idea that Sevilla offered no danger. Five shots on target required Courtois to work. Possession helped Madrid establish their attacks without shutting down every route to their own area. Confusing control of the ball with defensive safety would be a poor lesson to take into the Barcelona game.
The analysis: Güler connects, Diomandé advances
Güler’s midfield role gives Madrid a link between winning possession and accelerating. His value extends beyond the opening goal: a midfielder able to receive and redirect play allows Bellingham to support attacks instead of carrying the responsibility for every transition. The opener illustrated that relationship, with Diomandé finding a team-mate available behind the initial attack.
On the left, Diomandé supplied depth and forced defenders backwards. His involvement in the second-goal combination and the pass preceding the penalty extended his influence beyond one goal and one assist. Those contributions should not be mistaken for four officially credited goals or assists; they concern his part in building the attacks.
Valverde’s presence on the right supplied another outlet and useful cover when Sevilla attacked. Mourinho’s next challenge is to preserve these connections against stronger pressure. Circulating possession against Sevilla and escaping Barcelona’s press are different tests.
Güler’s performance also included a disputed moment: his incident with Peque before the opener brought no disciplinary sanction. That context should not disappear from the assessment simply because the midfielder later scored. How a match with Madrid reduced to ten might have unfolded remains hypothetical, rather than an alternative result.
Mbappé: outstanding finishing, avoidable risk
Mbappé deserves full credit for his finishing. Madrid’s second goal demanded technical control and a quick decision; his penalty then stretched the lead to three. He fulfilled his responsibility as a scorer.
That does not make the turnover before Bueno’s goal acceptable. Cucurella’s pass put him under pressure, but protecting possession remained a shared responsibility. At 3–0, conceding a turnover so close to goal was avoidable. A leading forward can deliver an excellent attacking performance and make an important mistake in the same match.
Our player of the match: Yan Diomandé
Diomandé gets our vote for the breadth of his influence: he helped open the scoring, contributed to the attacks that widened the lead and ended Sevilla’s brief revival. This is SNA’s editorial choice, not an official competition award. Güler also had a strong case through his work connecting Madrid’s play.
The Ivorian’s performance strengthens the discussion about competition with Vinícius. It does not provide grounds to assess an absent player’s performance or settle the pecking order permanently. Status guarantees no position; one impressive evening should not become a judgment on an entire season either.

Three tops and three flops
The tops: Diomandé for his influence across several attacking phases; Güler for the opener and his midfield connection; Mbappé for turning Madrid’s territorial advantage into a substantial lead. Courtois also deserves recognition: his saves mattered in a game the final score might otherwise make look too easy.
The flops: Castrín, beaten by the run and responsible for the penalty foul; Kike Salas, bypassed during the second-goal move; Cucurella, for the risky pass before Sevilla’s goal and his booking against Ejuke. These judgments concern weaknesses in this match, without erasing other contributions or attacking anybody’s character.
What changes before the Clasico
Madrid have seven wins and two defeats from nine league matches. Their 21 points leave them behind Barcelona on 27 and Atlético on 22. The Clasico offers an opportunity to cut the leader’s advantage; beating Sevilla did not itself reduce that six-point gap.
The encouraging development is collective: clearer support around the ball and several players capable of deciding attacks. Consistency remains the task. Madrid must maintain their standards when the result appears secure, especially against opponents more likely to punish a careless turnover.
