U17 AFCON Final: Assane Sarr still saving Senegal against Tanzania?

There are courses that announce the giants and what Assane Sarr has achieved with Senegal since the beginning of the U17 AFCON is one of them. Ahead of the final on Tuesday against Tanzania (19h GMT), the 15-year-old goalkeeper is among the Lions' biggest hopes in their quest for a second continental title after 2023 and the Amara Diouf generation.

A penalty specialist
At only 15 years old, the goalkeeper of Ndangane FC shows a disconcerting maturity for his age. From the top of his 1m80, Sarr never trembles on his line and spreads his serenity to the rest of his teammates, starting with defense. Its size allows it not only to be imperial on its aerial sorties, but also to dive to depths that are not within the reach of any guardian of its age.

It is precisely in this respect that he has impressed since the beginning of the 2026 edition. Assane Sarr has indeed repelled 7 penalties (including shots on goal) including the first one during the second day of group stages against Ghana to allow Senegal to win (1-0). Before repeating in the quarterfinals against Mali (1-1; 4-2 on penalties). But it was especially in the semi-finals that the young goalkeeper brought out the best.

Facing Morocco, Assane Sarr has turned into an almost impassable wall. With a penalty saved in the game and then four exits during the penalty shootout to send Senegal to the final (1-1; 7-6). A heroic performance that reinforces his status as one of the main architects of this eloquent journey from Senegal, which he will seek to finish on a high note this Tuesday against Tanzania.

A leader at heart
Beyond his exceptional displays, Assane Sarr also excels in his role as captain of the Lionceaux. An ability to manage emotions and guide the group that makes him the embodied leader of this new rising generation.

It’s true that I am young, but since the national youth teams, my journey has been entirely focused on this responsibility and experience. My teammates trust me,"

says Sarr about his leadership in an interview with the CAF.

Assane Sarr is not only a leader by his actions, but also by his words and makes sure that the current passes between him and his defense:

"We have played many matches together. Communication is essential between the defense and the last bulwark, that is to say me. This experience and this thirst for victory are the foundations of our solidarity and allow us to continue to make Senegalese football shine,"

 he said.

This Tuesday, the eyes of all of Africa and recruiters will be riveted on him, waiting for a new capital performance to confirm Senegal’s domination of African football in recent years.
