Wembanyama powers Spurs to seventh straight NBA win

The San Antonio Spurs continue their fine run in the NBA. The Texas franchise claimed a seventh consecutive victory on Friday night, beating the Sacramento Kings on their home floor (124-109) in a NBA Cup game. Once again, Victor Wembanyama was the star, with 30 points and 14 rebounds.

Wembanyama decisive again in just 26 minutes

Two days after scoring 52 points against the Dallas Mavericks, the French big man delivered another remarkable performance. In 26 minutes on court, he made 10 of his 18 shots, including four of six from three-point range, and sank six of nine free throws. With 14 rebounds, he posted a double-double that underlines his growing influence on the Spurs' game.

San Antonio quickly took control of the contest, winning the first quarter 38 to 29. The Texans led by as many as 24 points. Wembanyama scored 12 straight points across the end of the first quarter and the start of the second, helping his side keep a firm grip on the game. Devin Vassell, Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle also contributed to the win with 19 points each.

A scare with no apparent consequences

The night could have turned out differently for the Frenchman, however. Just before half-time, his left ankle rolled after contact with Domantas Sabonis, who was penalised with a flagrant foul. Despite the pain he felt at the time, Wembanyama was able to continue playing with no apparent difficulty.

Less involved in the second half, he scored ten more points before leaving his team-mates to manage the closing stages. San Antonio ultimately won by fifteen points and picked up a second victory in this year's NBA Cup.

San Antonio confirm their ambitions

The latest win lifts the Spurs to seven wins and two defeats in the regular season. The Texas franchise move closer to the top three in the Western Conference, behind the Los Angeles Lakers, the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Houston Rockets.

Last season's beaten finalists, the Spurs now have encouraging momentum. Their trip to Sacramento also marks a good start to a run of four away games. They face the Portland Trail Blazers the very next night, looking to extend their winning streak.
