African and Gabonese football is in mourning. Panthers striker Aaron Boupendza, 28, died on Wednesday in China, where he had been playing for a few weeks with Zhejiang FC in the top flight. According to initial reports relayed by Chinese media, notably TVR Info, the player is said to have fallen from the 11th floor of his residence.

The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear for now. Local authorities are currently considering three possibilities: an accident, suicide or a criminal act. An investigation has been opened, with inquiries under way at the scene and potential witnesses due to be questioned. Some sources mention an altercation with a close contact, but this has not been officially confirmed.

Rumours of his death spread rapidly on social media before being confirmed by Dieudonné Ndoumbou Likouni, former president of the Gabonese Football Federation. He is relying on the account of his son, Alexander Ndoumbou, also a Gabon international and a player in China.

A career marked by plenty of moves, with his breakthrough in Turkey

Born in 1996, Aaron Boupendza began his professional career at CF Mounana, one of the leading clubs in the Gabonese league. He was then signed by Girondins de Bordeaux in France, without establishing himself there for the long term. He came to wider attention during spells at Pau FC and then Tours FC, clubs in the lower divisions, where he shone with his eye for goal.

But it was in Turkey, playing for Hatayspor, that Boupendza truly took off, finishing as top scorer in the Turkish league in 2020-2021. That form opened the door to an international career, with spells in several Gulf countries: Al-Arabi (Qatar), Al-Shabab (Saudi Arabia), then a stint in the United States with FC Cincinnati, before a return to Europe with Rapid Bucharest in Romania. He had recently joined the Chinese Super League.

At international level, Boupendza had established himself as one of Gabon's great attacking hopes. He notably contributed to the qualifying campaign for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. His profile as a powerful, quick and unpredictable striker made him a major asset for the Panthers of Gabon, who saw in him a potential successor to the national team's former leading figures. But a number of disciplinary lapses ultimately led to him being left out.

A shockwave through the football world

News of his death prompted an outpouring of emotion among his former clubs and team-mates. Coach Marius Șumudică, who managed him at Rapid Bucharest, reacted with sadness in the Romanian media. "The mark Boupendza left on us will never be erased. We wish him divine mercy and offer our condolences to his family and loved ones," he said.

Just as he seemed to be relaunching his career in Asia, Aaron Boupendza's journey has been brutally cut short, leaving the memory of a talented, combative player and a man well liked within the Panthers, despite the sense of unfinished business he leaves with many Panthers supporters.
