"I knew this day would come: the time has come to close this chapter. Football has been such an important part of my life for so many years. It has given me wonderful memories, allowed me to meet incredible people, and experience moments I will never forget ," wrote Adel Taarabt.
Born in Taza, Morocco, Taarabt trained at RC Lens before moving to England. Loaned and then transferred to Tottenham at the end of the 2000s, he nevertheless struggled to establish himself with the Spurs, where his playing time remained limited.
QPR, the breakthrough
It was at Queens Park Rangers that the attacking midfielder really broke through. During the 2010-2011 Championship season, he delivered an outstanding campaign, carrying his team to promotion to the Premier League and being voted the league's best player. He stayed several seasons at QPR, establishing himself as one of the most spectacular players in the division, before loans to Fulham and then AC Milan brought his time in England to a close.
A difficult exile then a rebirth at Benfica
In 2015, Taarabt signed with Benfica. His start in Lisbon was difficult: an interview that displeased the club's management saw him sidelined from the first team and demoted to the reserves for several years. A loan to Genoa, where he was repositioned deeper on the pitch, allowed him to relaunch his career. Returning to Benfica from 2019, he regained an important place in the squad and contributed to several titles, including the Portuguese league and the League Cup.
Released by Benfica in 2022, Taarabt flew to the United Arab Emirates, where he wore the captain's armband at Al-Nasr before joining Sharjah in 2025. It was in these colors that he played his final matches before announcing his retirement.
An international career with Morocco
Wearing the jersey of the Atlas Lions, Taarabt earned 30 caps and scored 4 goals, notably taking part in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
Regarded by many as one of the greatest talents ever seen in England's second division, Adel Taarabt leaves behind the image of a player with immense potential, sometimes slowed by issues of consistency and fitness, but capable of flashes of brilliance that lit up every stadium he played in, and regrets that linger given his talent.
