AFCON of stars: Osimhen, now or never

In 2013, Nigeria won its third and last African Cup of Nations title. Twelve years later, the Super Eagles are chasing another continental crown. Finalists in the last edition with a great Osimhen, the Nigerian team can once again count on its striker to try to go all the way in Morocco.

Osimhen made his national team debut in June 2017. Eight years later, the Galatasaray striker has become his country's leading scorer with impressive statistics: 31 goals and 12 assists in 46 games. After making a brief appearance at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (45 minutes played), which ended with a bronze medal, and missing the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations due to a positive Covid-19 test and a facial injury, he was impressive at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Although he scored only one goal and delivered one assist, the 26-year-old was the spearhead of the Super Eagles. He put pressure on opposing defenses and his presence was indispensable in the tactical system of José Peseiro, the former coach.

Victor Osimhen in better shape than ever
After being sidelined by a left ankle injury, Victor Osimhen has made a spectacular start to the 2025-2026 season. Both with Galatasaray and the Nigerian national team, the 26-year-old striker has been on top form. He is in the best shape of his life just a few weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He has scored nine goals in 12 games in all competitions with the Istanbul club.

Winning a fourth star has been the goal of Nigerian sports fans since the last title in 2013. As the team's star player, Osimhen will be under enormous pressure. The Super Eagles also have the status of African vice-champions to defend. With their striker, they are stronger than ever and have a high winning percentage.

Victor Osimhen is gradually recovering from his moderate ankle sprain. He has resumed training and should be back in competition in the coming days. The Lagos native will use the upcoming games with Galatasaray to get back on track and arrive at the Africa Cup of Nations in top form. Lifting the trophy will surely be in the back of his mind. He is a competitor and will give his all to clinch that final victory.

Nigeria is in Group C of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda. The Super Eagles will kick off their campaign against Tanzania's Taifa Stars on December 23 at 5:30 p.m. GMT at the Fez Stadium.
