Alexandre Oukidja's comments are sure to cause a stir. Alexandre Oukidja has launched a scathing attack on the organisation of the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon. The Algeria international goalkeeper, 35, even went as far as calling the tournament "disgusting". "The AFCON in Cameroon was a disaster. I asked Slimani and Riyad Mahrez because they have played in several AFCONs. They had played in quite a few AFCONs. Islam told me it was the worst. In the corridors, it stank. A disaster." "The organisation of the pitches was appalling." "Strangely, we had Covid, the Cameroonians had zero."

Alexandre Oukidja and his team-mates did not stay long in Cameroon. They were knocked out at the first stage with two defeats, against Equatorial Guinea (1-0) and Ivory Coast (3-1). The defending champions finished bottom of their group with one point. It is a poor showing that Algerians still cannot stomach. After that sorry campaign, they failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. They were undone by a Karl Toko-Ekambi goal on their own turf in the second leg of the play-off. It was a defeat that left even some Algeria players traumatised.
