A setback against Switzerland that does not sit well
The Fennecs’ adventure at the 2026 World Cup came to a sudden halt in Vancouver. The defeat against Switzerland (2-0) left a particularly bitter taste for supporters and leaders of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF). More than the result itself, it is the manner of the loss and the lack of playing identity that are crystallizing criticism.
For many observers, this knockout match highlighted the same tactical shortcomings and collective weaknesses already seen during the elimination against Nigeria at AFCON 2025. Vladimir Petkovic, who until then enjoyed a certain level of confidence and a solid footing within the federation, saw his position falter in just 90 minutes. Public anger and media pressure ultimately convinced senior leaders that a point of no return had been reached.
A separation under high tension
As initially revealed by journalist Nassim Bezol from Botola, the FAF now finds itself in an uncomfortable position. Just days before the competition started, the Executive Board had officially extended the Swiss coach’s contract until 2028, along with a salary increase. A decision that now weighs heavily as assessments are made.
With the split now complete in the minds of Algerian decision-makers, financial negotiations promise to be especially tough. According to information gathered by Sport News Africa, the federation is seeking an amicable agreement, negotiating a severance package equivalent to five or six months of salary.
Behind the scenes, the coach’s camp is digging in its heels. The Swiss manager believes he has fulfilled his part of the contract and achieved the initial goals assigned to him. This difference in viewpoints sets the stage for tense days ahead between the lawyers of both parties as they work to formalize the termination.
The challenges of a new cycle
Beyond Vladimir Petkovic’s personal case, it is the immediate future of El Khadra that is at stake. The shockwave from this elimination has already brought about major upheavals, starting with Riyad Mahrez’s announcement of his international retirement, marking the definitive end of a golden generation.
“It is now impossible to continue like this. The public expects a clear break and an ambitious football project,” confided a source close to the matter.
Convinced that a rebuild must take place on new foundations, FAF president Walid Sadi and his team are not waiting for Petkovic’s official departure to get moving. Scouting has already begun on the coaching market. First informal contacts have been made to sound out available candidates, with Eric Chelle’s name quickly mentioned in the media. The objective is clear: to rapidly find someone with the profile to reinvigorate and give character to a national team that must soon look ahead to its upcoming fixtures.
