BAL 2026: Kalahari conference opens the BAL this Friday

BAL, season 6, let’s go. The games can finally start for the new season of the Basketball Africa League. And until 5 April, six teams will fight to finish in the first four places to qualify for the Final 8, the final tournament, which will take place in Kigali, Rwanda. The Johannesburg Giants, Al Ahly SC from Libya, RSBB Tigers from Rwanda (which replaces the Patriotic Army of Rwanda), Dar City from Tanzania, Nairobi City Thunder from Kenya and Petro Luanda from Angola will be the teams competing for this tournament.

To open this season 6 at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria, we will have the line-up between Al Ahly SC, finalist in 2024, and RSBB Tigers, 4th Rwandan club to participate in the BAL. The Libyans, who count in their squad the last two MVP of the tournament (Lual Lual Acuil and Jean-Jacques Boissy), leave with the favors of the predictions.

Jean Jacques Boissy wants to shine again at the BAL.

The expected Giants
After the opening match, we will still have, this Friday, the Johannesburg Giants who will enter the track. 3rd South African club to play the BAL after Cape Town Tigers (2022, 2023, 2024) and Made By Basketball (2025), the Giants will meet the Tanzanians from Dar City. The two formations, who are novices in the competition, had already crossed during the qualifiers of the East division, with a South African victory. Let us also note that the Giants will be keen to achieve the best South African performance in BAL, by overtaking the Tigers (4th in 2024).

Petro Luanda, favorite of the conference?
Among all these teams, Petro Luanda seems to have the favor of the predictions to finish in the top 4. Indeed, the Angolans have the best track record over the 5 editions already contested: a 3rd place in 2021, a final in 2022, a victory in 2024 and a new final in 2025. Thus, Petro Luanda simply played 3 finals out of the last 4 editions.

Players to follow
Several players will be to watch closely to do the show. On the heels, we can mention: Jean-Jacques Boissy and Jo Lual Acuil (Al Ahly Ly), the last two MVPs, David Michineau (Dar City), Axel Mpoyo (RSBB Tigers), Nino Dim (Johannesburg Giants) or even Childe Dundao (Petro Luanda).
