BAL: Major projects of the NBA for 2027

The BAL could experience an historic turning point in 2027. The NBA indeed wishes to make changes for next year. She wants to establish a league with 12 teams. This league will be composed of 12 fixed teams. The objective: first to strengthen the stability and competitiveness of African basketball, but above all to attract new investors to the continent.

To ensure its participation, each franchise member will have to put out the $50 million bagatelle and have a world-class arena, according to information from Marc J. Spears. A staggering amount that could, however, be a hindrance for many teams on the continent. But this choice could rather have the aim of purifying the candidates and retaining only the big players in order to have high quality games. In its forecasts, the NBA targets the following cities: Nairobi (Kenya), Lagos (Nigeria), Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Dakar (Senegal), Cairo (Egypt), Johannesburg (South Africa), Rabat or Casablanca (Morocco) and Kigali (Rwanda).

Does the financial argument prevail?
Launched in 2020, the Basketball Africa League is today structured around three conferences: Kalahari, Sahara and Nile. In each, 12 matches are played. Then, after this round of skimming, eight teams compete in the Final 8, at the end of which we know the winner of each edition.

But for economic forecasts, the NBA wishes to make these changes which, according to them, should increase the attractiveness of the competition. Yet, it has generated more than 250 million dollars since its beginnings. By 2034, the NBA predicts gains of $5.4 billion. In addition to this economic aspect, the North American league also wishes to contribute to the development of talent from the continent.
