Sofian Kiyine is in trouble. The 25-year-old Moroccan has been suspended by his club for causing a violent road accident. Last Thursday, driving at high speed, the 25-year-old Moroccan hit a roundabout at more than 200 km/h (on a road with a 90 limit) before ploughing through a sports hall in his car in Flémalle, near Liège. Kiyine, who suffered multiple fractures, was taken to hospital. But the player is in a stable condition, according to his club, OH Leuven. The Belgian side also deemed it necessary to suspend the player indefinitely. The reasons?
The club explained in a statement: "The club is taking this decision to allow the investigation to proceed calmly. Sofian Kiyine's health is relatively good given the circumstances of the accident. He could leave hospital today (Monday). The club and the player will make no further comment."
Miraculously, nobody was injured inside the sports centre. But disaster was narrowly averted. "We came close to a catastrophe," Sophie Thémont, the bourgmestre (mayor) of Flémalle, had told La Dernière Heure. "Some young girls had been training just before the impact. They had gone back to the changing room eleven short seconds before the crash. Luckily, a real tragedy was avoided. The prosecutor's expert has arrived to examine the situation and the car has been removed for the investigation."
