While Africa has been buzzing for several days with the final qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), football was not the only thing drawing interest across the continent. The H2 Art event, held in Algiers from 14 to 16 November 2024, was a genuine tribute to urban culture in Algeria.
For three days, fans of urban sport and street art enjoyed a range of disciplines, from BMX to skateboarding, as well as roller skating, breaking, hip-hop and graffiti. Launched by the H2 association, which is committed to promoting art and culture for all, the event set out to create a unique platform for expression. By bringing together local and international artists, H2 Art aimed not only to showcase the many facets of urban art, but also to raise public awareness of the importance of these disciplines within Algeria's cultural landscape.
Among the event's objectives, the first was to promote urban culture. H2 Art wanted to raise the profile of urban artistic disciplines and encourage their recognition in Algeria. Alongside that, the festival gave artists a genuine space for expression. They were able to perform freely, share their passion and inspire the audience, underlining the importance of these art forms on the local artistic scene.
Introducing young people to these disciplines was also one of the event's major themes. Workshops and introductory sessions were set up so that children and teenagers could discover these art forms and get actively involved. It was a fantastic opportunity for younger generations to become familiar with forms of expression that are often little known.
Finally, the event aimed to strengthen artistic ties. Through exchanges between Algerian and international artists, H2 Art helped enrich Algiers' cultural fabric and paved the way for future collaborations.
Several highlights marked this celebration of urban culture. The BMX, skateboarding, roller skating and breaking competitions and performances were real spectacles, with artists able to show off their talent and creativity. In addition, interactive workshops aimed at young people offered an educational approach, introducing future enthusiasts to the various street arts. Finally, the graffiti exhibitions gave the public a visual immersion, with works created live by talented artists.
All in all, H2 Art is part of a broader drive of initiatives to boost the Algerian art scene. By giving young people new opportunities for expression and artistic development, the festival helps anchor urban culture in everyday life in Algiers and inspire a new generation of artists and spectators.
