The last day of the group phase of the CAF interclub cups will be decisive for the Congolese clubs in view of a qualification for the quarter-finals. FC Saint Éloi Lupopo in the Champions League and AS Maniema Union in the Confederation Cup, will each seek a historic qualification for the quarter-finals of a CAF competition.
Lupopo still believes in it
Qualification for FC Saint Eloi Lupopo is possible in the Champions League, but the Cheminots are not masters of their destiny. Indeed, with 5 points, the club is last in a very tight group B where all the teams can still qualify.
4 points separate the first from the last on the standings with Al Hilal from Sudan (leader, 8 points), Mouloudia Club from Algiers (2nd, 7 points), Mamelodi Sundows from South Africa (3rd, 6 points) and Lupopo (4th, 5 points). Traveling this Saturday in Kigali, the Railwaymen will have to, to qualify, not only beat Al Hilal but also hope for a victory of Mamelodi Sundows against MC Alger in the other match of the group.
A victory is enough for Maniema Union
In the Confederation Cup, qualification seems to be within the reach of AS Maniema Union which is quite master of its destiny. Second in their group (9 points), the Unionists from Kindu will on Sunday in Lubumbashi host the Kenyans of Nairobi United who have lost all their matches since the beginning of this group stage.
But to be reassured of a qualification without taking into account the result of the group’s other match, Maniema Union absolutely must impose itself to avoid any surprise that might occur during the match between Wydad de Casablanca, leader of the group (12 points) and the Tanzanian club of Azam FC, third (9 points). A draw could also be enough for Maniema Union but on condition that the WAC wins at the same time against Azam. So to remain masters of their destiny, the Congolese must win this Sunday against Nairobi United.
