Nigeria carried the first real threat in this game. From a corner, the Super Eagles thought they had taken the lead through Ajayi in the 16th minute, but the referee, after consulting the VAR, ruled the goal out for offside. A warning shot for the Indomitable Lions. Both sides played with plenty of intensity, and it was Nigeria who eventually found a way through. After pressing Omar Gonzalez, Victor Osimhen won the ball and found Ademola Lookman on his right. Lookman beat Ondoa, who could only get a fingertip to it. 1-0 to José Peseiro's side. The goal also added some needle to the contest, as in the next passage of play Tolo squared up to Onyeka and Wooh got involved. The referee calmed things down. The Super Eagles held their one-goal lead at the break.

In the second half, Nigeria managed their advantage and had several chances to extend it, without success. At the other end, Cameroon had no answers. Worse, the Indomitable Lions had not managed a single shot on target since the start of the game. Rigobert Song then sent on Vincent Aboubakar in the 78th minute, his first minutes of this AFCON 2023. But it made no difference. The Cameroonians even conceded a 2nd goal, a brace for Lookman (90th). Victor Osimhen's team-mates won this round of 16 tie deservedly. The Nigerians, in control, thus move into the quarter-finals, where they will face Angola. The Palancas Negras had thrashed Namibia 3-0 earlier in the day.
