Senegal have made a good start to their title defence. The Lions beat Gambia in Group C of AFCON 2023. The African champions wasted no time against the Scorpions, opening the scoring in the 6th minute. Found by Sadio Mané inside the Gambian box, Pape Guèye struck low into the net for his first AFCON goal. Gambia tried to draw level but ran into the Lions’ solid defence. The Scorpions were then reduced to ten men late in the first half when Ebou Adams was sent off for a heavy foul on Lamine Camara.
Lamine Camara impresses
The Lions quickly extended their lead after the break. Rising star Lamine Camara doubled the advantage. Released by Kalidou Koulibaly, Ismaila Sarr found Lamine perfectly, and he scored across goal from a tight angle. The young Metz player went on to score twice: after a dazzling dribbling run, Iliman Ndiaye supplied Camara, who curled a right-footed shot into the top corner from 18 metres. The FC Metz midfielder was named man of the match, completing a perfect tournament debut for the 20-year-old. Senegal move top of Group C ahead of Cameroon-Guinea, scheduled for 17:00 GMT.
