Forty-five years on, the Africa Cup of Nations is heading back to Moroccan soil. The Sherifian Kingdom has been named host of AFCON 2025. Morocco were in fact the only country left in the race, as Algeria, Zambia and the joint Benin-Nigeria bid had all withdrawn. "Today, Morocco, with the unanimous backing of Africa and without the slightest debate, has the honour of hosting the next Africa Cup of Nations. It is the reward for tremendous work led by a great King. It is also the best possible recognition for a people passionate about football", said Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation.
In that regard, Lekjaa stressed that the Kingdom would make the event "a revival of Mediterranean civilisation between the north and south of the Mediterranean", adding that the African continent will rally behind Morocco to win the challenge, which is also an African challenge.

Morocco also intend to stage one of the best AFCONs in the competition's history. FRMF president Fouzi Lekjaa is promising a tournament that is "safe, peaceful, meeting international standards and in the best conditions, guaranteeing a unique experience for players, supporters, visitors and television viewers around the world."
AFCON 2025 will also allow the Sherifian Kingdom to strengthen its bid for the 2030 World Cup. That bid is on track, as all 54 CAF member countries back the joint bid from Morocco, Portugal and Spain.
