A wake-up call for Banyana Banyana. South Africa, the defending champions, could only manage a 1-1 draw with Tanzania on matchday 2 of the 2024 Women's AFCON, in Group C. Tanzania took the lead early through Opah Clement (24th minute). The South Africans pushed on before finding the equaliser in the 70th minute through Bambanani Mbane. Desiree Ellis's side were therefore forced to settle for a draw. Even so, they stay top of the group with 4 points, ahead of Mali.

Mali had earlier held Ghana to a 1-1 draw in the evening. Alice Kuci (6th minute) scored an early goal to put Ghana ahead. But Aïssata Traoré (52nd minute) levelled for Mali. Mali (4 points) are 2nd. Even so, Mali and South Africa are all but certain to reach the quarter-finals.
They meet on Monday on matchday 3. A draw is enough for them, while at the other end of the group, Ghana (1 pt) and Tanzania (1 pt) must win to have any hope of at least finishing among the two best third-placed teams at this 2024 Women's AFCON.
