Algerian fans went through the full range of emotions before finally finding relief in the last seconds of the first quarter-final of CHAN 2022 between the hosts, Algeria, and Côte d'Ivoire (1-0). In a tight, cagey game, it was the home side who finally had the last word against the Elephants. The decision came from a penalty needlessly given away in stoppage time (90+5) by an Ivorian defender. Without flinching, Aimen Mahious converted the spot-kick and sent his side into the semi-finals.

While the outcome was a happy one for Madjid Bougherra's men, the match had started badly for them. They were quickly reduced to 10 men after goalkeeper Alexis Guendouz was sent off (20th) for handling the ball outside his area. But the balance was soon restored because, a few minutes later, the referee brandished another red card, this time to Ivorian midfielder Kouassi Attohoula (34th).

In the semi-final on Tuesday 31 January, Algeria will face the winner of the last quarter-final, between Niger and Ghana, scheduled for this Saturday 28 at 19:00 (GMT).

Senegal get the better of their neighbours Mauritania

In the other quarter-final, Senegal got the better of their neighbours Mauritania (1-0). A penalty converted by Lamine Camara (34th) was enough to delight the home-based Lions of Teranga. After that, Pape Thiaw's men managed to withstand the pressure from the Mauritanians, who were willing but too wasteful in the opposition box.

In the semi-final, Senegal will face the winner of the third quarter-final between Madagascar and Mozambique this Saturday at 16:00 (GMT).
