Senegalese football is shining across the continent. After the AFCON, the land of Teranga follows up with the CHAN. The home-based Lions have won this competition for the first time in their history. They beat Algeria on penalties (5-4).
Both sides went at it from the first whistle, but Senegal looked the more dangerous, creating the best chances. After a lovely run down his flank, Sané was stopped on the edge of the box (14th). Despite a fairly tame Algerian attack, the Lions committed a string of fouls and picked up three yellow cards. The Algerians pressed in the closing minutes of the first half but were wasteful in front of goal. The two teams went in at the break goalless.

After the restart, both sides were completely toothless in front of goal. In fact, it took until the 61st minute to see the first shot on target of the match, and it came from Senegal's Pape Diallo. He intercepted the ball around the halfway line, raced clear on the counter and tried his luck from 20 metres. But it was gathered comfortably by Algeria goalkeeper Guendouz. Driven on by a fervent crowd, Algeria pushed to win it, but without success.
Algeria and Senegal could not be separated. It was 0-0 after normal time. Algeria dominated extra time clearly. From a cross, Belaid planted a perfect header and Senegal goalkeeper Pape Sy made a fine save. The Fennecs kept pushing. After a quickly taken corner, Mezigue tried a volley. Pape Sy saved his side again, tipping it away. The score did not change. On to the decisive penalty shoot-out, and it was Senegal who won it (5-4 on penalties). A fine performance from the Lions, who dominate continental national-team football.
