Cycling: Saturnin Yaméogo, the talent who embodies the future of Burkina Faso

While Paul Daumont logically took the glory by winning the 36th edition of the Tour du Faso 2025, another Burkinabe cyclist rode with a consistency and class that commanded respect: Saturnin Yaméogo. Fourth in the points classification at the end of the ten stages, the rider from the Association des jeunes cyclistes de Koudougou (AJCK) was one of the early leaders of this 36th edition and, above all, the most loyal lieutenant to a leader who needed everyone to help him retain his title.

Cycling: Saturnin Yaméogo, the talent who embodies the future of Burkina Faso

Saturnin Yaméogo, the new star of Burkinabe cycling

Paul Daumont climbed to the top of the 2025 Tour du Faso, but alongside him, working hard in the shadows, another hero wrote his own legend: Saturnin Yaméogo. Fifth in the Tour of Cameroon, winner of the first stage of the Tour of Togo and fourth in the points classification in the 36th Tour du Faso, the young Burkinabe was much more than a lieutenant: he was the shield and sometimes the sword of the national team. Beyond his legs, there is his head. Discreet, almost shy off the bike, Saturnin Yaméogo speaks little but acts a lot. We saw him sacrifice his personal chances to protect his leader's yellow jersey, while remaining lucid enough to go for hot spots or bonuses when the opportunity arose. He has a sense of teamwork that is rare among young African riders, who are often tempted by individualism as soon as the spotlight appears.

"I did my job well to keep the jersey, so as not to lose it at the last minute. I'm still behind Paul Daumont, protecting him if there's an attack, I have to encourage him. Our hope is that if the peloton comes together, we'll be the favorites to keep the jersey until the end," says Saturnin Yaméogo.

For Paul Daumont, yellow jersey winner of the 2025 Tour, his teammate Saturnin Yaméogo is a very promising talent who is definitely one to watch. "Saturnin Yaméogo, frankly, I'm very proud of him. He's a young man with a bright future, he's very promising. I wish him all the best, lots of courage, and lots of determination, because I think that in the years to come, he'll be a great rider. I wouldn't be surprised to see him win the Tour du Faso one day. If, at his age, he is already capable of such feats with rigor and determination, I can only wish him the best."

Jérémie Ouédraogo, coach of the Burkina Faso national team, paid tribute to Saturnin Yaméogo's exceptional work, praising his unfailing commitment and rapid progress. “Whether in Cameroon, Benin or Mali, he has made a name for himself. He confirmed this at the Tour du Faso by playing a major role in the national team as Paul Daumont's loyal lieutenant. He is a player with a bright future.” To aim for the very highest level, Jérémie Ouédraogo is encouraging Saturnin Yaméogo to follow in Paul Daumont's footsteps: “More work, more discipline, and you'll be ready to shine in the next Tours.”

Burkina Faso has found its new winning duo: Paul Daumont, the puncher-climber, and Saturnin Yaméogo, the finisher-fighter. One took the yellow jersey, the other made his mark. And when you consider that behind them comes an even younger generation, it's clear that the golden years of Burkinabe cycling are only just beginning. Saturnin Yameogo did not win the 2025 Tour du Faso. But he was one of its key players and, without a doubt, one of its most exciting revelations. African cycling has a new name to remember. And that name already sounds like a foregone conclusion.
