DC Virunga: a first African experience in sight after a historic victory in the Coupe du Congo

It is Daring Club Virunga that will accompany AS Maniema Union to represent the DRC at the next Confederation Cup. The club from Goma won the 60th Coupe du Congo by defeating AS Butras from Katanga in the final on penalties (4-2 p.s.o.), after a 1-1 draw at the end of regular time.

This victory is the result of great determination from the team, as indicated by its coach, Tifo Miezi: “It’s the result of great determination. We approached each match with the desire to go all the way. We are very happy,” he stated.

A victory with a special flavor

This victory for DC Virunga has a very special significance for several Congolese sports analysts, especially considering the security situation prevailing in eastern DRC, notably with the occupation of the city of Goma, home of the Daring Club Virunga, by the AFC-M23 rebels.

For Richard Kadima, this success is proof that Goma truly remains part of the DRC despite the occupation: it is a victory that symbolizes national unity. “This victory is very meaningful because it demonstrates that the DRC remains as one despite the enemy's occupation of Goma. This city is and will always be part of the DRC, I am happy for them. Now, they need to properly prepare for their African campaign,” he said.

For its first participation in the Confederation Cup, Daring Club Virunga will have to begin the competition from the very first preliminary round next September. The club from Goma will need to significantly strengthen their squad if they hope to go far in this competition.
