This Friday, January 16, a meeting of the CAF Executive Committee is being held, as well as a General Assembly. In all logic, the fate of the secretary-general, Véron Mosengo-Omba, will be addressed since he has exceeded the age limit for practicing since last October (and again, he had already obtained a special exemption to continue until now).
In a «normal» world, which would respect its rules and statutes, Veron should therefore have already been replaced. Nevertheless CAF, especially under its administration, does not care much about compliance with the texts as several internal reports have pointed out. Thus the future of Véron is now being written away from CAF and could end in Kinshasa.
The committee was initially scheduled to end on November 30, 2023!
Since April 24, 2023, the FECOFA (Congolese Federation of Association Football) has been placed under a normalization committee by FIFA. Originally, this committee was supposed to last until November 30, 2023, to "manage current affairs" and ensure an electoral process.
Prolonged again and again, protected despite scabrous financial affairs, the committee remained in place with new members and even a change of president. Behind this, according to several sources within the CAF and FIFA, Véron Mosengo Omba has always enjoyed a certain influence since the original members of this committee had for example links with him (which is also forbidden according to the texts).
Again ignoring the rules and statutes, he was personally involved with the normalization committee by going to Kinshasa several times to supervise even meetings related to the electoral process. A process constantly postponed and which should, ultimately, result in April 2026, three years after the installation of the committee.
A change in the statutes to allow him to introduce himself?
If the statutes of FECOFA were logically revised, an addition surprised the attentive observers since now it was enough for a potential candidate to have had an activity within football in general (and not specifically Congolese) to present themselves. A nuance that would allow Véron Mosengo-Omba to be eligible even if the issue of dual nationality may cause concern.
Within FIFA, Gianni Infantino is pleased with the transfer of the one he has known for decades from CAF to FECOFA. A potential extension of the normalization committee the time necessary for Véron to leave the CAF and be able to present himself in Kinshasa, there is only one step: the presidency of the FECOFA would only be one step away from making this happen.
While waiting for the clarification of his future at CAF, speculation is raging, particularly at FIFA, whose reinforced control over African and Congolese football is continuously intensifying.
