"If you can't get thrushes, you make do with blackbirds," goes the saying. Unable to break into the NBA, Amida Brimah has settled for its little sister, the G League. And the Ghanaian centre is shining there. On Friday 15 March, he made history by becoming the G League's all-time leader in blocks. He reached 345 career blocks early in the game and added two more by the end of it. And on Saturday 16 March, he added four more to his record.

A Santa Cruz Warriors player since the summer of 2023, Amida Brimah had previously turned out for other G League clubs. He started with the Austin Spurs in 2017-2018 and then in 2018-2019. After that came spells with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants and the Mets de Guaynabo. In between, the 30-year-old Ghanaian had stints in Serbia (KK Partizan Belgrade), at Filou Oostende (Belgium) and at Bourg-en-Bresse (France)

A brief taste of the NBA

Though he shines in the G League, Amida Brimah has never really been given his chance in the NBA. Signed by the Indiana Pacers, the big man played just 5 brief appearances there in 2021 before moving on. Back in the minor league, will the Ghanaian get another shot in North America's top basketball league? That is far from certain. But for now, Brimah is thriving in the NBA's anteroom and enjoying himself every night…
