Resilience. Georgi Minoungou is a role model for footballers and for anyone with a dream in life. You have to hang in there and give yourself the means to succeed. That is what the Ivorian winger has done. Where many would have crumbled, the 22-year-old chose to fight, persevere and live out his dream: becoming a professional footballer. Yet an accident nearly derailed everything. Two years ago, an infection hit his eye during a training camp in Spain. It would cost him an eye, the left one. It was a cruel blow, but he met it head-on with heart and courage, like a Navy Seal.
“I don't know what happened. It was one of the hardest moments of my life. My vision got worse with every training session and I had to have an operation,” he said recently. “It doesn't stop me. I can't see out of my left eye any more, but I keep going. I see with one eye, but I can do more than some people who see with both. That's my mentality. My dream is to play at the highest level. Even though it hasn't been easy, I worked hard and I got there”, he recalls.

“You never know what can happen tomorrow”
Hit by this stroke of misfortune, Georgi Minoungou refused to be beaten. He was able to continue his career and signed for the Seattle Sounders in 2024. “Sometimes in the dressing room, my team-mates ask me: 'Georgi, how are you? You're smiling all the time.' I'm a cheerful person, even in difficult moments. Today may not be a good day, but you never know what can happen tomorrow”, he says happily.
Thanks to his perseverance, Georgi Minoungou is now playing in the Club World Cup. And even though his side have lost two games, against Atlético (1-3) and Botafogo (1-2), the youngster was able to show his qualities against the Colchoneros and could be on the pitch against Paris Saint-Germain this Monday evening at 19:00 GMT.
An unusual path
Georgi Minoungou is only 22, but his story already has plenty of chapters. An Ivorian U20 international, he is still waiting for a chance to play with the Elephants.
At club level, the winger spent time at Czech side MFK Vyškov, where he signed in 2021. He was then loaned to MLS Next Pro club Tacoma Defiance, before being sold for a fee of between 250,000 and 500,000 dollars. The Sounders' senior side then snapped him up. Georgi Minoungou, who is now shining with Seattle, has shown his human qualities as well as his football ability. The Club World Cup could therefore be a springboard for him and help him get back to a club in one of Europe's top leagues.
