It is a concise statement that put an end to speculation this Friday, March 6, 2026. The PFL has officially announced its separation from Francis Ngannou. If the organization ensures maintaining a «great respect» for the athlete, the observation is bitter: the one who was supposed to be the face of the league and the engine of its international expansion leaves after only a little turn in the cage.
Only one fight in three years
When in May 2023, Ngannou slammed the door of the UFC to join the PFL, the promises were immense. We talked about a guaranteed seven-figure salary per fight, the freedom to go and compete in boxing (a first), and especially regular activity in MMA.
However, the accounting balance sheet is poor. Since its signing, the Cameroonian has fought only once under the banner of SmartCage. It was in October 2024 in Riyadh, during the 'Battle of the Giants' gala. Facing Renan Ferreira, Ngannou only needed one round to win, reminding everyone of his devastating power. But this coup d'éclat will remain his only appearance in MMA over the last four years.

The attraction of boxing rings, with pharaonic scholarships harvested against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, eventually relegated the cage to the background. For fans, the disappointment is immense: the long-awaited rebound after the UFC turned into a long wait punctuated by inactivity.
PFL Africa: a project without a captain on board?
Beyond the sporting aspect, this break throws a polar cold on the PFL Africa project. Ngannou was not just a fighter; he had been appointed president of the African division, a key role that was supposed to provide a platform for the continent’s talents.
Uncertainty now hangs over this position. Already in August 2025, the boss of the PFL, Donn Davis, had not hidden his annoyance at Ngannou’s absence during the first major event on the continent. This separation raises a burning question: will Francis Ngannou remain the ambassador of this project, or is the divorce total? Without its figurehead, the development of the league in Africa loses its main marketing argument.
What is the future for the champion at 39?
At 39 years old, the future of the «Predator» is now inscribed in dotted lines. Is a return to the UFC possible? Dana White has already closed the door tightly, recalling her numerous conflicts with Ngannou. Boxing? Despite record revenues, his KO cashed against Joshua showed the limits of the exercise against the global elite. Retirement? With a well-filled bank account, retraining in several businesses, the cinema and an already written legend, hanging up the gloves has never seemed so credible.
The transition of Francis Ngannou to the PFL will remain in the annals as a contractual revolution, but an obvious sporting failure. The one who wanted to «change the system» leaves free, but with an aura of MMA fighter somewhat eroded by time and inactivity.
