France made a winning start to the 2022 World Cup, beating Australia 4-1 on Tuesday 22 November in the second match of the Group D opening day. With this win, Les Bleus (3 pts, +3) go top of the group. They are ahead of Tunisia's Eagles of Carthage (1 pt, 0), who held Denmark to a 0-0 draw a few hours earlier (1 pt, 0). Australia (0 pts, -3) are bottom.
A winning start! 👌

It had started badly for the reigning world champions. Craig Goodwin put Australia ahead as early as the 9th minute. After a short spell of uncertainty and doubt, Didier Deschamps' side took control of the game. They were rewarded in the 27th minute with an equaliser from Adrien Rabiot.
After his goal, the Juventus midfielder provided the assist for France's second, scored by Olivier Giroud (32nd). Kylian Mbappé added a third before half-time (45th).
But the hero of Les Bleus' World Cup opening night was Giroud. The AC Milan striker, who scored a second goal in the 50th minute, joins Thierry Henry at the top of France's all-time scorers. The pair each have 51 goals.
