After a goalless draw with Denmark (0-0) and a defeat to Australia (1-0), Wahbi Khazri and Tunisia must pull off a shock against France in their final Group D match to have any hope of reaching the round of 16. While the stakes are high for the Eagles of Carthage, they are a little higher still for the Montpellier forward.
Born in Corsica and a former France youth international, Wahbi Khazri is a key figure in the Tunisia squad despite his limited playing time at the tournament. Ahead of the World Cup, the player, who has previously turned out for Bastia, Rennes, Saint-Étienne and Sunderland, spoke in an interview with Ligue 1's media channel.
“I wanted to be in France's group before the draw was made. It's a dream that is going to come true. We are going to play against some top players. It's a game that will be broadcast all over the world and, above all, in France, where I live, so that will be nice. Showing what you can do against a big team and great players is what you want in a career. I think I'm rather well liked in Tunisia”, said the 31-year-old forward.
He went on: “I try to represent the country in France every weekend by performing well. Then, I'm also lucky enough to represent Corsica, because I was born there. I have quite a few flags on my shoulders, which is nice. When people talk about me, I like hearing: 'Wahbi the Corsican, Wahbi the Tunisian'. I find it pleasing to see your origins highlighted. I'm 100% Tunisian, 100% French and 100% Corsican. I'm not uncomfortable with that. ”
