"No priority in suffering": Mbappé responds to the Ceuta controversy

What was supposed to be an institutional tribute turned into a true politico-media imbroglio. On the occasion of the Liga match between Elche and Real Madrid (2-3), the Spanish football authority had invited players to wear a t-shirt displaying the slogan “Todos somos caballas” (“We are all Ceutians”). The initiative aimed to show the solidarity of professional football with the population of Ceuta, the Spanish enclave in North Africa facing an unprecedented migration crisis.

But as they were about to step onto the pitch, Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Ibrahima Konaté chose to fold or partially obscure the printed message on the garment, instantly triggering a storm of reactions.

Political and sporting indignation

The trio’s individual initiative very quickly caused irritation among top sports authorities. Liga president Javier Tebas did not hide his dissatisfaction, reminding that support protocols must come before personal statements: “Refusing to wear the t-shirt properly amounts to not wearing it at all. These are institutional initiatives and not spaces for individual expression,” he criticized.

The affair also moved into the political arena. Several segments of the Spanish right and far-right were quick to seize on it. The Ultras Sur, a radical supporter group banned from the Santiago-Bernabéu since 2013, published a scathing statement demanding public apologies from the three players. They even called for the resignation of president Florentino Pérez if he did not punish what they described as a “lack of respect” towards Spanish citizens.

Mbappé’s response: “No hierarchy in suffering

Amid the media storm, Kylian Mbappé chose to publicly stand by his actions. In an interview with the sports daily AS, the French striker was keen to clarify his intentions without disowning his gesture.

While reaffirming his full support for the residents of the enclave — assuring he supports them “100%” — the French star explained that he wanted to broaden the reach of the message so that no one would be forgotten:

Before being a footballer, I am a human being. I also wanted to acknowledge all migrants who have lost their lives or are living in extremely difficult conditions. I do not wish to rank or prioritize suffering.

By refusing the binary framing of the controversy, the French international aims to embrace a global humanist approach. Whether this clarification will suffice to calm the heated debates shaking up the Spanish press and football remains to be seen.
