With Marseille back in the Champions League, fans had been expecting big names in the January transfer window. So when Pablo Longoria announced the signing of Chancel Mbemba, a free agent after four seasons at Porto, there was some disappointment among a few Marseille supporters.
The 28-year-old Congolese has quickly won them over. Solid, comfortable on the ball and capable of scoring from set pieces, the Leopard now has universal approval. He has been a mainstay of Igor Tudor's side in the first half of the season, with Marseille currently fourth in Ligue 1. Even so, Chancel Mbemba is not entirely satisfied. "I'm not satisfied. But I've shown my qualities, because a lot of people here in France didn't know me. I haven't done anything here yet. It's not over. When I'm not winning anything, I'm not happy. When I have a medal, I'll be satisfied," said the centre-back.
Chancel Mbemba wants to take the fight to PSG at the top of the league. "Collectively, we need to finish first," he said. "It's not over. Personally, I need to win trophies. I want to do it here, I want to be able to say so. I like challenges. It won't be easy, but we're going to try. We started well, then we fell short in a few games. But we'll keep working for the second half of the season and achieve our goal."
