Senegal: What if Pathé Ciss became the Lions' defensive solution?

Long regarded as a mere recuperative midfielder, Pathé Ciss is gradually becoming a credible option in central defense. With the uncertainties surrounding Kalidou Koulibaly’s physical condition and the lack of solid alternatives on the axis, the versatility of Rayo Vallecano’s player could become a real asset for Pape Thiaw as the 2026 World Cup approaches.

For several weeks now, one sector has seriously started to raise questions in the environment of Senegalese selection: the central defense. If Senegal still has strong individualities, the certainties are reduced to a few weeks of the 2026 World Cup scheduled in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The case of Kalidou Koulibaly is particularly worrying. Absent since April 8, the Lions captain is going through a difficult period with Al Hilal. The Saudi club confirmed that the human rights defender is currently undergoing a rehabilitation programme after examinations in Spain revealed the need for additional treatment of the anterior thigh muscle.

There is still a total lack of clarity about the actual severity of his injury. Simone Inzaghi, his coach, even made alarming remarks about the state of the player: "30 years of experience in football and my eyes have never seen an injury comparable to that of Koulibaly. She is very strange." Today, time is of the essence against the Senegalese captain. One month before the World Cup, no one is able to ensure with certainty that he will regain his best physical level on time.

Moussa Niakhaté, the only real guarantee
In this context, Moussa Niakhaté appears almost as the only sure value of the Senegalese hinge. After an excellent season with Olympique Lyonnais, the 29-year-old defender has established himself as one of OL’s surest bets. With 41 matches played and nearly 3500 minutes played, he is now the most consistent Senegalese defender at the very top European level. Solid in the duels, performing well in the recovery and mentally consistent, Niakhaté has become essential in the mind of Pape Thiaw.

But behind him, the solutions seem limited. Mamadou Sarr has been struggling to convince since after the AFCON. He is going through difficult situations at Chelsea where, lately, the young 20-year-old defender is often between the bench and away from the group.

Pathé Ciss, a credible alternative
It is precisely in this context that the profile of Pathé Ciss takes on another dimension. The Rayo Vallecano player probably had one of the most successful seasons of his career. Accustomed to playing in the midfield, he is increasingly used in the defense axis by his Spanish club. And his performances are far from anecdotal. During the return semi-final of the Europa Conference League against Strasbourg last week, Pathé Ciss played a major role in sending their club to  the finals.

He delivered a very high-level service in the central hinge. Focused, aggressive in the duels and very technically clean, he perfectly managed the depth and the opposing transitions. At 32 years old, the Senegalese seems to have reached full maturity in his game.

A profile that can reassure Pape Thiaw
The strength of Pathé Ciss lies above all in its versatility. His past as a defensive midfielder gives him a valuable quality in relaunching and reading spaces. Unlike some more limited defenders technically, he brings serenity in the first ball exits and is added to the fact of being right-handed like Koulibaly. Physically, it remains solid in the impacts. He also has a real ability to defend low, to absorb weak times and to manage aerial duels.

His high-level experience, knowledge of international football and tactical maturity are also important elements in a competition as demanding as a World Cup. In a Senegalese defense today lacking guarantees, Pathé Ciss finally offers several assurances: experience, tactical discipline and adaptability.

A reflection that is now essential
Just a few weeks before the 2026 World Cup, Pape Thiaw will have to make a quick decision. The Senegalese coach is facing a delicate equation: prepare a competitive defense while the physical state of Kalidou Koulibaly remains very uncertain.
In this reflection, Pathé Ciss could well become more than just an emergency solution. The player of Rayo Vallecano now has the experience, game intelligence and versatility necessary to occasionally stabilize the hinge of the Lions.

What if Senegal’s best alternative in central defense was already in the middle of the field?
