Abdoulaye Niakhaté Ndiaye was born on 10 April 2022 in Ziguinchor. He took his first steps in football on the streets. He then joined Association sportive Dakar Sacré-Cœur, where he learned the basics. Thanks to a partnership between the academy and Lyon, the prodigy joined Les Gones aged 18, in 2020, and continued his development there.

Ligue 2 as a launchpad

However, Abdoulaye Niakhaté Ndiaye's talent was too big for Lyon's youth set-up. He was sent out on loan to Bastia. In the 2022-2023 season, the lanky defender made a huge impact in Corsica, playing 28 games in Ligue 2. He was part of a superb season for the club, who finished 4th. Troyes then spotted a good opportunity and paid close to 4 million euros to sign him.

In the 2023-2024 season, Abdoulaye Niakhaté Ndiaye was again highly effective, making 31 appearances in Ligue 2. At one point, the Senegalese (1 cap) was even made captain in the absence of Xavier Chavalerin.

Brest and stepping up

In the summer of 2024, Abdoulaye Niakhaté Ndiaye moved up a level. He left Troyes and joined Brest in Ligue 1 on loan. The Brittany club, who qualified for the Champions League, also gave the rock-solid defender a chance to experience European football.

Between suspension and injury, Abdoulaye Niakhaté Ndiaye had uneven playing time early in the season. However, he has been undroppable since December. Proof of that: he has started Brest's last 7 games. In all competitions, the 22-year-old has made 12 appearances this season.

Playing it like Kalidou Koulibaly

Senegal can look to the future with confidence at centre-back. Abdoulaye Niakhaté Ndiaye is the future for the 2021 African champions. Very tall, strong in both ground and aerial duels and capable of carrying the ball forward, the left-footer has shades of Kalidou Koulibaly, a player he has also rubbed shoulders with in the build-up to the latest AFCON in Ivory Coast. And if he manages to follow in Koulibaly's footsteps, Senegal will have an exceptional defender for the next 10 years at least.
