UFOA-A U17 2026 Final: Gambia dethrones Sénégal in a nail-biting finish

Curtain down on the UFOA-A U17 tournament. This Sunday, September 20, at the Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium, the grand final pitted Senegal against Gambia in an unpredictable matchup. Double reigning champions and playing at home, Senegal was aiming for a third consecutive crown. For their part, the Gambians were determined to get their revenge after an inconclusive first encounter in the group stage (0-0).

The Wanou Gomez show

The match remained extremely tactical and competitive from start to finish. After a first period of observation that ended scoreless, the second half failed to separate the two sides. Despite the introduction of offensive options on the Senegalese side, the Gambian defence and goalkeeper Wanou Gomez held firm. The latter even saved his teammates, reduced to 10 men, by stopping a crucial penalty in the very final moments of regulation time.

The fateful penalty shootout ultimately turned in favour of the Baby Scorpions. Thanks to another decisive save from Wanou Gomez, Gambia won (5-3) and lifted the UFOA-A U17 trophy for the very first time in their history.

Meanwhile, Guinea climbed onto the third step of the podium after beating Liberia (2-0). A victory that allows the young Guineans to secure their qualification for the next U17 AFCON.

The Senegalese shine despite the defeat

While the team trophy heads to Banjul, the Senegalese squad did not leave empty-handed, with several of their gems distinguishing themselves during the closing ceremony. Having delivered a very high-level competition, Senegalese goalkeeper Assane Sarr was rightfully named the tournament's best goalkeeper. Imperious on his line throughout the competition and highly assured in aerial play, he conceded no goals during regulation time in this final.

A formidable attacking outlet throughout the Lionceaux's campaign, Cheikh Oumar Sy finished as co-top scorer of the competition. The Senegalese striker shares this distinction at the top of the scoring charts alongside Gambian Aliou Saine, both with 4 goals to their name.

Very prominent throughout the tournament and a leader for his team, it was Gambian Omar Badji who was named the competition's best player.
