This may be the start of a new era in men's volleyball in the DRC, one that sees VC Espoir's dominance end and power shared with other clubs.
After 6 consecutive Congolese championship titles, the Kinshasa side, nicknamed the Espérantistes, could do no better than third place at the 2024 Coupe du Congo. VC Espoir were knocked out in the semi-final by Garde Républicaine, who went on to win the title.
Unusual defeats
The days when VC Espoir finished seasons unbeaten are long gone. The first warning sign for the Espérantistes came in the Entente de Kinshasa, where they suffered two defeats in the first leg of the league, against Garde Républicaine and the Aigles du Congo, before beating them in the return leg.
Those two defeats already suggested the Coupe du Congo would be tough. In the Coupe du Congo, VC Espoir suffered two more defeats, against VC Police (3 sets to 2) in the group stage and against Garde Républicaine in the semi-final (3 sets to 0)
Sharing control with the newcomers
VC Espoir will now have to get used to sharing power with Garde Républicaine and the Aigles du Congo, two new teams who were making their first appearance in the Coupe du Congo. Both clubs had already shown their quality by beating Espoir in the Entente de Kinshasa league. Each built around a young squad bolstered by a few experienced players, the two newcomers fully intend to extend their dominance over the long term. After the Coupe du Congo, the three clubs will contest the zone 4 qualifiers for the African Club Champions Championship.
