Who is Mouine Chaabani, the new head coach of Tunisia?

A former player and Tunisian international turned coach, Mouine Chaabani has proven himself. His appointment as Tunisia's head coach is unanimously supported. He has experience with Tunisian and African football. Strong arguments confirming that he may be the right man for the job after the unsuccessful spell of Sabri Lamouchi and Hervé Renard's brief interim.

A true legacy left at Espérance de Tunis

In 2014, Mouine Chaabani ended his playing career at CS Hammam Lif. In that same year, the central defender began his coaching career at the same club as an assistant. One year as assistant and another year (2015-2016) as head coach with acceptable results (15 wins, 10 draws, 19 losses), he was propelled to Espérance de Tunis.

Espérance de Tunis is Chaabani's home. He made his debut there as a player. And his first notable achievements as a coach were with the Blood and Gold. Assistant coach between 2016 and 2018, he then took over the reins of this legendary Tunisian club.

This transition is far from being a failure. Between 2018 and 2021, Mouine Chaabani set the bar very high at Espérance de Tunis. During this period, he won 7 trophies: 3 Tunisian championships (2019, 2020, 2021), 2 Tunisian Super Cups (2018, 2019), and 2 CAF Champions Leagues (2018, 2019). The record is praiseworthy: 84 wins, 25 draws, 21 losses. Having left an indelible mark at the club, he returned there in 2023 for 8 wins, 4 draws and 2 losses in 14 games.

The Egyptian adventure with two managed clubs

Following his remarkable work at Espérance de Tunis, Chaabani was in demand everywhere. In 2021, he left his native Tunisia for Egypt where he joined Al-Masry SC. With this club, he managed 36 matches for 11 wins, 11 draws and 14 losses.

After a season at Al-Masry, Mouine Chaabani stayed in Egypt but changed clubs. He signed with Ceramica Cleopatra FC in 2023. Arriving at the club in January 2023 and after 12 matches (2 wins, 8 draws, 2 losses), the Tunisian coach terminated his contract in May 2023 to return to Espérance de Tunis.

Remarkable achievements at RS Berkane

Mouine Chaabani confirmed his great potential on the RS Berkane bench. A very ambitious club that has already started to shake up the hierarchy both in Morocco and on the African stage, RS Berkane enlisted the Tunisian coach's services to maintain and even raise its level.

In two seasons, from 2024 to 2026, Mouine Chaabani got the job done. Even better, he achieved something historic, allowing RS Berkane to win the Botola Pro for the first time at the end of the 2024-2025 season. Under his reign, the Moroccan side also lifted the CAF Confederation Cup in 2025, its third in history after 2020 and 2022.

Before leaving RS Berkane for the Tunisian national team, Chaabani left Renaissance Sportive de Berkane in second place in the Botola for the 2025-2026 season.

A proponent of rigorous tactical organization, a compact defense and rapid transitions, Mouine Chaabani is already a reference in Africa. He was named best coach of the Tunisian championship three times (2018, 2019, 2020), and best coach of the Moroccan championship in 2025. In 2018, he finished 3rd in the category of coach of the year at the CAF Awards and second in 2019.
