The case between Yan Diomandé and Max-Alain Gradel, via his agency Maxidel Management, goes far beyond a simple contractual dispute. It highlights the grey areas of sports representation, the race for the most willing and the legal mechanisms surrounding the career management of players.

The genesis of the problem
The conflict between the Ivorian structure and the Ivorian prodigy originates in a refusal to renew (or recognize) a representation mandate. Indeed, on February 6, 2026, Maxidel Management, the agency of the former Ivorian international, publishes a statement in which it accuses Yan Diomandé of having signed with another structure without respecting his contractual obligations in force.

"We were surprised to learn that the player Yan Diomandé, contractually linked to our agency, would have signed with another structure without information, consultation or prior notification, contrary to the obligations provided for within the framework of our contractual relationship."

Clearly, Maxidel mentions a serious breach of the contract’s clauses, which, according to the former captain of the Elephants, runs until June 2026 (1st contract) or even December 2027 (that of the extension).

This revelation acts as a detonator. Very quickly, the canvas ignites. The camps are forming, pointing the way, the versions clash and the accusations multiply, nourishing a soap opera where passion sometimes outweighs common sense.

The key role of Dez Bamba and the first grey spots
At the heart of the battle, a central figure; Dez Bamba, founder of the Inter Foot South Comoé Academy. He is Yann’s trainer and mentor. The latter never hid his reservations about the management of the first Yan Diomandé file by Maxidel. Sport News Africa met him on February 16, 2026, around 5 PM GMT, in a trendy restaurant at the II Plateaux Vallons in Abidjan. He did not hide his bitterness and disappointment.

“I started to have doubts about Max Gradel’s ability to be transparent with us”
“It was in 2022 that I had the first contacts with Max Gradel. At the time, there was Leipzig who wanted Yan at the same time as Monaco. But before the Monegasque club, there was Sunderland who wanted to pay Yan’s 20 million euros release clause to Leganès, his then club. Max told us that the offer was even on the table. We agreed and afterwards, it didn’t happen. Later, I learned that Sunderland only had 10 million euros. I asked Max why he lied to me about the English offer? From there, I began to have doubts about his ability to be transparent with us but out of respect for him, out of naivety too, I continued the collaboration,"

 revealed Dez Bamba.

Despite that, a situation forces him to sign with Maxidel.

«When the offer from Leipzig came, it was a German who contacted Max to talk to us about it. This gentleman did not know how to reach us. Max then asked us to sign with him for a year (2025-2026) before Leipzig hired Yan. We were obliged to do it otherwise we would lose a contract. But afterwards, nothing was respected anymore,"

continued the one called the "father of Yan Diomande."

"From the first contract, there had already been an abuse as I explained to you. (...) Max Gradel didn’t find any sponsorship contract, no club contract, but he wanted to extend Yan. We said no"

, he says.

200 million, Mercedes and Rolex... the revelations of Maxidel
Thus, according to him, the collaboration with Maxidel would not have produced the expected results, which would have motivated the decision not to extend the adventure. This version is diametrically opposed to that of Jean-Martial Lopoh, FIFA agent at Maxidel. It was he who led all the discussions and finalized the contracts. He firmly maintains that Yan Diomandé has indeed signed an extension until 2027, accompanied by a significant financial contribution. Sport News Africa went to meet him in the upscale neighborhood of the Riviera Golf 4 the same evening, around 21h GMT. He wanted to be clear with supporting evidence including emails, messages, and audios.

Yan Diomandé with Lopoh Jean-Martial on December 31, 2025, in Marrakech.

« Yan signed his extension with our team, in Marrakech, just after the 3rd match of the Elephants against Gabon (2-3). His first contract with us runs until June 2026, I would like to specify. The day he signed, there were teammates present who can confirm it to you. Moreover, the photos of the signature and the contract are available. There is nothing hidden,"

reassures the representative of Maxidel before revealing staggering figures.

“Maxidel paid Yan Diomandé 200 million CFA francs, including about fifty in cash and the rest transferred to his account. The traces are there. In addition, a state-of-the-art Mercedes GLE was offered to him. We even added, as a bonus, a Rolex watch. He was happy but in no time everything changed,"

 confesses Lopoh.

Roc Nation enters the scene
In the meantime, a global player emerged: Roc Nation Sports, the sports representation agency founded by American rapper Jay-Z. On the specialized platform Transfermarkt, Roc Nation now appears as the player’s official representative since February 6, 2026. According to Maxidel, Dez Bamba had already cashed a commission with the company. He therefore owed a debt to the Americans. It was he who convinced Yan to sign by promising that there would be no impact on his career, despite his extension of the lease at Maxidel.

“I sent a message to my dad Dez Bamba to tell him that I want to continue with Maxidel”
For the observers, this choice is not trivial. Primo, Yan Diomandé and his entourage of which Dez Bamba never officially confirmed the contract extension mentioned by the agent. However, the player himself sent a message to Maxidel, around February 5, 2026, where he writes this: "I sent a message to my dad Dez Bamba to tell him that I want to continue with Maxidel."

A few hours later, the golden boy of Ivorian football was seen in the company of the American actress Kim Kardashian and the Brazilian international player, Vinicius Junior. He was signing in the process with the American agency, taking care to reimburse the money and the car he received to extend with Maxidel. Hence the wrath of the box created by Gradel.

'Returning money received unfortunately does not cancel a contract signed in due form,'

says Lopoh.

Roc Nation is the elite of sports marketing, an international network, a financial and strategic power capable of propelling a career to new heights. But this change, subject to confirmation, poses a major legal problem: was Yan Diomandé still contractually linked to Maxidel at the time of signing elsewhere? «Yes», answers Lopoh.

Legal imbroglio with heavy sporting consequences?
According to the Italian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the existence of a still valid contract between Yan Diomandé and Maxidel has already taken effect. Liverpool, although very interested in the profile of the 19-year-old Ivorian prodigy, reportedly ended the discussions after being informed of this contentious contractual situation. Worse: the contract would be officially registered with the English Football Federation (FA), with, in addition, a partial transfer of rights to the image of the player. In modern football, few clubs of this size engage without full contractual security.

Strategic silence of Roc Nation?
While the controversy is growing in Côte d'Ivoire, Roc Nation remains surprisingly silent. An omerta that intrigues, but which, for some, conveys great serenity.

'It is useless to seek to discredit Dez Bamba. The child is on his father’s side and they have decided to end their collaboration with Gradel. As the latter’s contract expires in a few months, he seems to be funding a smear campaign against Yan and his new family. However, the new agency will pay the necessary compensation to permanently close this chapter. In any contract representing a serious agency or agent, there is always financial compensation when a party "breaks" the contract. Roc Nation has, as they say in English, signed Yan’s contract. They have already introduced it, they will not back down,"

explains the Ivorian agent Valer Saint-Clair, who had represented Aruna Dindane and Kolo Touré in the early 2010s.

This stance suggests that the American multinational has more or less legally secured its operation, even if it means compensating the former agency in case of an abusive breach. In any event, Maxidel Management warned in its statement

«That a formal procedure will be initiated and the case brought before the competent bodies of FIFA, so that the rights of [their] structure are fully respected and that full light is shed on the circumstances surrounding this commitment».

In the opinion of Doumbia Daouda, a lawyer specializing in sports law and FIFA agent, ’the topic is both relevant and sensitive, especially since it concerns agent services and other types of services that align with players' needs, which only authorized professionals can accomplish. It must therefore be approached with responsibility, objectivity and without passion.

In this case where big money, ambitions and ego intertwine, will legal truth or amicable settlement prevail? Wait and see.
